Talk about an attention getter! This 1970 Buick GS455 has been body-off restored as a replica of the legendary GSX. It’s all there; the Saturn yellow paint, black accents, front and rear spoilers, sport mirrors, and of course the hood tach. Did Buick ever make a better looking muscle car? And not only does this car capture all these great GSX elements, but it does so for about 1/3 the price.
To begin, this car is a real 1970 GS455 with a VIN starting in 446. It also one of the very first such cars built; it was manufactured in Flint in early August 1969 (08B), has a VIN of 01014, and a body number under 1000. The paint color was changed during the restoration to the brilliant colors you see today. The restoration also covered things like seals, window felts, emblems, and glass. The GSX graphics, chin spoiler, and rear spoiler were added along with the hood tach. Note the trunk has the correct torsion springs so it does stay up by itself. The 15” wheels wear new tires with 215/65 in front and 255/60 in back.
Of course, there is also a rebuilt 455ci engine that sounds great and gives plenty of “go” to keep up with the “show”. It is the correct 1231738 casting with the proper ram air intake on top. This engine compartment will have you anxious to pop the hood wherever you go. There is also an aluminum radiator and a dual exhaust feeding Flowmaster 40-Series mufflers. The transmission is a TH400 automatic while the 3.55 rear end is the correct 10-bolt BOP setup used on the GS455.
There are new parts throughout the car; brakes, steering, suspension, body mount bushings, etc. Power steering and power brakes are present. The rear suspension has boxed lower control arms with a stabilizer bar, while the upper arms have relocation brackets for reduced wheel hop.
The interior is classic Buick, and most everything has been replaced. The black theme with woodgrain accents has a more refined look than other GM brands, and the upholstery material is more upscale as well. The front bucket seats flank a nice center console with horseshoe shifter, while the dash is clean and uncluttered with a GSX emblem above the glove box. The speedometer, fuel gauge, and hood tach all work properly. So do the horn, radio, heater/defroster, and wipers/washers. All lighting is functional too including the headlights, turn signals, running lights, brake lights, backup lights, courtesy lights, and gauge lights.
Take a look at the pictures and I think you’ll agree this is a fantastic looking Buick. It has seen a great deal of work with about 1,000 miles since completion. And if you’ve ever driven an early 70’s A-body then you know what a nice ride they offer. It may have the big 455 motor, but with the automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes it is a car anyone can drive and enjoy. Unless you don’t like attention.
