This 1969 GS400 is about as cool a Buick as you will find.  This rust-free car combines the refined lines of a Buick coupe with a raucous 455ci engine to create a ride that will not go unnoticed.  To be sure, this is a genuine 446-code GS400.  It has seen a great deal of recent work to make it a turn-key car for the next owner.  And while those beefy Mickey Thompson rear tires might suggest this is not an ordinary Buick, as soon as you turn the key it will remove all doubt.

Let’s start with the impressive underside of this GS.  The frame and floors are original and solid throughout without any signs of trauma.  Note the absence of any factory or aftermarket undercoating too.  It can be hard to find such a specimen, GS or otherwise.  The body wears a nice repaint in the original Cameo Cream (base/clear) while the vinyl top appears original.  There are a few small paint touch-ups and some minor road rash down low, but it is very presentable and looks good overall.  Much of the brightwork is original and in nice shape, though there are some new pieces and a rechromed front bumper.  All lighting was replaced with LEDs except the headlights.  The front wheels are 14” with 225/70 Cooper tires while the rears are 15” with 275/60 Mickey Thompsons.

The original engine was replaced in favor of a 455ci block (1231738 casting) with a 0.038” overbore, resulting in 464ci.  This is a fresh build with ported heads, H-beam rods, flat top pistons with valve reliefs, and a big solid lifter camshaft.  It is topped by a TA Performance Stage 1 aluminum intake with an Edelbrock AVS2 carburetor and an open element air cleaner, while underneath is a steel SRE 7-quart oil pan.  As with most big cam engines, there is not much vacuum at idle so an auxiliary Leed vacuum pump was installed for good power brake operation.  The timing was locked as well.  The headers and intake have been all ceramic coated and look great.  The fuel tank was removed and cleaned and a new fuel pump was installed.

Next up in the drivetrain is a rebuilt TH400 automatic transmission with a shift kit.  There is a new yoke and driveshaft too.  The BOP Positraction rear end has also been rebuilt with new bearings, seals, and 3.42 gears.  This GS has many other updates that make it fun and safe to drive including all new brakes, tie rods, ball joints, and suspension bushings.  There is also a quick ratio steering box for a more precise feel.  Other new parts include a dual 3” exhaust with X-pipe feeding 2-1/2” mufflers and 3” resonators.  The radiator and fan clutch are also new.

The black vinyl interior is stock with the exception of the underdash gauges for water temperature and oil pressure and a big tachometer.  A modern AM/FM stereo was recently installed too.  The front bucket seats were completely redone and look and feel great.  The center console flows nicely through the horseshoe shifter to the Buick lettering.  All seat belts and buckles are present including those for the front shoulder belts.  This GS is equipped with a factory remote mirror and tilt steering column along with a set of rubber floor mats.  The headlights, turn signals / canceller, courtesy lights, and backup lights all work properly as do the horn and wipers.  Originally a factory a/c car, the compressor and hoses have been removed.  The heater core and blower motor are both new.  The trunk has been freshened up as well.

There is a lot to like with this one.  It has excellent bones and loads of recent performance upgrades and other mechanical service.  Not to mention being a tough looking GS400.  If you like to cruise slowly and quietly down the boulevard then this Buick is not for you.  But if you want to make your presence known and have a little fun in the process then you’ve found your car.
