Vehicle Description
1977 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
The 1977 Corvette was no longer badged with the "Sting Ray" script.
The tried and true orange engine color was changed to blue between
August and September of 1976. Some early production 1977 Corvettes
were still built with the orange painted engines, but most have the
new blue engines. A new crossed flag badge adorned the front of the
hood between the headlights as well as on the fuel filler door. The
glass roof panels that were announced this year were never
delivered on a production car. The 500,000th Corvette rolled off
the line this year.
For consignment, a C3 version from 1977 with theL82 optioned 350ci
V8 under the hood and a 4-speed manual to row the gears. Overall in
fair condition on the exterior, a favorite design version of this
writer with all rounded edges and a beautiful profile and
stance.
NOTE: Due to varying emissions control devices being removed,
please check with your state, county, local or provincial motor
vehicle department to verify the ability to legally register this
vehicle in your area.
Exterior
Bathed in medium blue metallic, there are several areas on the
surface of this car that show runs, marbling of the finish and
dryness of the new paint. There are areas that have been wet
sandedbut never finished, creating a haziness on various panels as
well. Overall the gaps are fairly consistent, and the chrome is
dimpled. Hidden headlights lead the way above the neoprene front
crash bumper, and a slightlyscooped L82 badged hood races rearward
between the curvy fenders. The coves just behind the front wheels
flare into the fender nicely and down below issome snappy stainless
and black rocker trimmings. Bringing up the rear are the round
taillights in a body matching curved bumper. 15-inch deep dish
Chevrolet rally wheels are all around and are wrapped in newer
Cooper Radial GT raised white letter tires in 245/60R15 format from
the 30th week of 2021.
Interior
Peering through the removable "t" top we see slightly wrinkled seat
covers covering the high back buckets which are tan leather and
looking very sharp. These are fronted by an angled dash that has a
center console extension which houses several gauges in the center
just above the shift lever. An AM/FM/CD is inserted here as well.
Deeply embedded circular gauges are in front of the driver as well
as the original steering wheel. Tan carpet covers the floors and is
in generally good condition but does show some fading to a greenish
gold color on the driver's side. This carpet also covers the
storage area behind the seats and provides the backdrop for the
added aftermarket speaker box. On the passenger's side there is no
glove box, but dual storage pouches are conveniently located in the
dash. Some options include factory air conditioning, power
steering, power brakes, and power windows.
Drivetrain
Under the forward hinged hood lies a L82 350ci V8 with a single
4-barrel carburetor perched atop an Edelbrock intake manifold. Some
chrome for the air cleaner and valve covers dresses up the lightly
patined engine bay and we note a newer AC compressor has been
installed. Bolted to the back is a T10 4-speed manual transmission
that sends power to a 3.08 Positraction rear axle to put the power
to the pavement.
Undercarriage
All nice underneath with a good sound structural frame and floor
pans. Some patina and road dirt are noted here along with some
slight surface rust on the usual suspects. Dual exhaust snakes its
way rearward from the long tube headers and runs to the back of the
car before ending in a pair of stock style mufflers. Independent
coil sprung suspension is on the front and an independent
suspension with a frame anchored differential and a transverse leaf
spring is on the rear. Power disc brakes adorn all 4 corners for
the whoa factor and we note the absence of a catalytic
converter.
Drive-Ability
This car starts quickly and runs very nicely. It is a nice
comfortable interior you slip into and slipping the shifter into
1st, we are off and running. Nice handling, and good acceleration
and overall power. It was a nice day and we took the roof panels
out and enjoyed the airflow. We did notice that the A/C was blowing
warm and the passengers window was slow, requiring some help to get
it moving. All other functions worked just fine.
With its lovely lines, "T" tops and an engine that was top of the
heap for the model year, this car is a good driver. The paint
condition prevents it from being a really nice car, however,
certainly is not a deal breaker. A turnkey and have fun Vette from
1977 which was a very good year.
