Vehicle Description
1993 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra
Ask an automotive enthusiast what they think of the letters "SVT"
and you'll likely get an answer related to a high-speed performance
vehicle. SVT, which stands for Special Vehicle Team, is a division
at Ford Motor Company responsible for engineering the company's
highest performance cars and trucks. The group, which was conceived
back in 1991 and officially launched in 1992, has roots that date
back to Ford's Special Vehicle Operations, (SVO), division. No
doubt, the SVO group helped kick things off with their creation of
the popular SVO Mustang, which featured a revolutionary 2.3L
turbocharged fuel-injected engine. SVT was founded by John Plant of
Ford Marketing, Janine Bay of Ford Mustang Program Management, and
Robert Burnham of Ford Truck Program Management. The official
launch came during the 1992 Chicago Auto Show with the unveiling of
the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra and SVT F-150 Lightning. Ford celebrated
SVT's 20th Anniversary at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show by unveiling
the 2013 Shelby GT500 convertible.
Here at Classic Auto Mall we await with worms on our breath, (uhh
baited breath actually!), to see what will come through the door
next. Well every now and again we get a car that is a jaw
dropper... so now we give you on consignment, and could be yours, a
1993 Fox bodied Mustang SVT Cobra. The inauguralyear for the SVT
program and the final year for the long running Foxbody Mustang.
With only 4 color choices availableon the Cobra this model year,
this one is drenched in this author's favorite of the choices, Teal
Metallic. Coming from long term ownership, this car has graced the
pages of 5.0 Mustang magazine in 2001 and is #585 of the 4,993 cars
built. It comes with its SVT certificate and has been hopped up
with the addition of a gnarly supercharger as well as many other
performanceenhancing goodies. Read on and prepare yourself to be
snake-bitten!
NOTE: Due to varying emissions control devices being removed,
please check with your state, county, local or provincial motor
vehicle department to verify the ability to legally register this
vehicle in your area.
Exterior
Paint codes RD adorn this car and in layman's language this
translates to Teal Metallic Clearcoat. The 1 year color covers the
upper body and lower sections as well as the ground effects. The
paint is excellent and covers straight steel sculpted panels which
make up this iconic iteration of the Fox bodied Mustang. It does
not get any better than this with excellent minded gaps, perfectly
straight rust-free panels, and clear plastic headlights and SVT
specific tail lights, (think back to the 84-86 SVO tail lights),
excellent lower body and rocker flanges, and a pristine factory
sunroof top and sloping rear hatchback complete with an aerodynamic
Cobra specific rear wing. A low rise cowl induction hood has been
added and just below is the Cobra insert within the neoprene front
bumpers. Factory badging of the long running ready to strike snake
denotes the mill that sleeps below the hood...shhhhhhhh, you'll
awaken the beast! Black accents with door handles and window
surround trimmings contrast to the Teal and show off the car as it
should. Wrap around rear tail lighting is perfectly placed above
the integrated body matching bumper. 17-inch SVT Cobra wheels are
on all 4 corners and have a nice factory fresh dull machined
looking finish.
Interior
The mid 1980's brought us some wild stuff, but then there were
highlights like the interior of this classic sly Fox with door
panels in gray with black control panels, black accent panels and
black door handles and switches. This continues for the seating
with Opal Gray leather high back buckets, sporting tuck and roll
inserts and smooth racing style wrap around bolsters. These seats
have power lumbar controls so you can get it just right baby bear
and the driver's seat is power actuated, a rarity in a Foxbody. A
complimentary light gray console races past toward the dash and has
a non broken ashtray door and a black accenting surround for the
short leather booted shifter. On the dash we have a mixture of
lower Opal Gray dash front panels which match up to the door panel
line, and above padded black dash top. Extensive use of the mid
1980's square and rectangle design is used for the dash, with all
controls and gauges in either of these simple geometric forms. All
laid out exactly the way it left the factory, even down to the
AM/FM/CD stereo, which is another rarely seen option. The dash is
pristine, and below are the lightly soiled carpets which float all
seats in a perfect sea of thick pile comfort. Opal Gray side panels
on the rear frame a rear 2 plus 2 bench which is shoehorned into
the back of the car, but is comfortable once you get there and it
can also be folded down to haul your trophy home from the next car
show.
Drivetrain
An original 5.0 Liter V8 with EFI to feeds this mill, and we are
ready to take on some serious stuff. This mill has been upgraded
with ARP studs, FelPro head gaskets and a Ford Racing F303
camshaft. Feeding copious amounts of air and fossils is a Vortech
S-Trim supercharger, an Anderson Ford Power Pipe, 42lb/hr fuel
injectors and a 255lph fuel pump. An 80mm mass air meter has been
added and MSD ignition lights the fire within. A rebuilt at 45,000
mile Tremec T5 5-speed manual transmission is now installed on the
back and a new Ram Power Grip HD clutch was added at the same time.
This pushes power back to a rebuilt Ford 8.8-inch 3.08 geared rear
axle featuring TracLoc. All in all just super duper condition under
this hood.
Undercarriage
Some slight surface rust on the usual suspects, but certainly
unremarkable and mostly straight unadulterated black painted
structurally sound steel unibody, floor pans and rockers. A dual
exhaust system snakes its way rearward and features Flow-tech
headers X piping and dual Flowmaster mufflers, and we note the
absence of catalytic converters. Independent coil springs for the
front suspension, and 4 link with coil springs for the rear, along
with power disc brakes all around along with Competition
Engineering subframe connectors are seen underneath in this clean
environment.
Drive-Ability
It's not every day one gets the opportunity to drive a 1993 so my
decoder/test driver/copy editor cohort and I both took the
opportunity and we found a quick starter, smooth runner, and a test
track ace with plenty of power, great handling, and good brakes
which stopped the car in a straight line. It also was an excellent
cruiser and produced a nice melodious sound with the exhaust. All
controls were working perfectly, with only the radio not belting
out tunes and the AC blowing warm. The buckets grab you in a
tasteful way, and everything is within easy reach while
driving.
The 1st of it's ilk to grace the vast inventory of our ever
changing Hallowed Halls. The right color, the right looks and some
extra power under the hood have everything coming up aces for the
foxy snake. Lots of love left in this one, and it's a classic Fox
bodied Mustang which are ever increasing in value right at this
moment. Hop in this 1 of 4,993 quick before it goes to someone
else.
