We sold this car to a long time SCCA Racer in Indiana, over the years, we kept the car at our facility, and would transport it to whatever race he wished to enter. Pittsburgh, Tremblant, Lime Rock, Pocono, Summit, wherever. And over the years I was proud to call him a friend. Truly one of the great gentleman in a presumably gentleman`s hobby.
If you are unfamiliar with Jack Turner`s creation, allow me to explain. Essentially a Sprite with modern (for 1959) race technology......super heavy duty tubular frame, thin steel inner panels cloaked in a fiberglass body but with aluminum doors. Stock Spridget front suspension and back axle but with a trailing arm suspension, tube shocks, Panhard rod, and adjustable torsion bars. VERY `trick.` Lighter than a Sprite, engine further back in the chassis for better weight distribution, and ideal for vintage racing.
This car is fitted with a correct (for VSCCA in the Northeast OR for small bore racing anywhere) 948cc race engine. Gas flowed head, race pistons, balanced, race cam, lightened flywheel, twin SUs, headers, mated to a straight cut close ratio BMC racing gearbox. Currently fitted with disc brakes but easily changed back to original drums.
A slick set of Halibrand alloy wheels (legal for VSCCA) and 450L-15 Dunlop racing tires. Such race items as an Accusump oiling system, oil cooler, special adjustable front level shocks, rear Koni tube shocks, big on board fire system, twin fuel pumps, Aeroquip fuel lines with pressure fittings, roll bar, racing seat, MSD ignition, on and on and on. Starts on the button, has a wicked `cammy` sound, change fluids, a quick go over and ready to race.
AND.........can be included in a `deal,` a fresh full race 1275cc engine, high compression pistons, big valve race prepared head, roller rocker assembly, ideal for racing with groups outside the Northeast in a 1.3 liter class.
Alas,my dear friend was ill, last race was in 2009, he died a few years ago, and now someone else will have as much fun as my friend had. These cars are extremely rare as only 670 Turners of all models from around 1957-8 to the mid sixties were built and according to the Turner register, only 64 950S cars are left.
Easy to drive at race speeds, great fun competing with other small bore racers, easy to service and maintain, can be made available with one fresh race engine and one stock engine (in addition to the race engine installed), and even comes with a Turner emblemed sports shirt.
