Vehicle Description
1986 Dodge Caravan Royal - One Family Owned Since New - 63k Miles -
2.2L 4 Cylinder - Automatic Transmission - Black Exterior - Red
Interior - Highly Original - No Accidents, Clean Carfax For some,
it may be hard to believe that the Dodge Caravan is considered an
influential vehicle in automotive history, but it is truly an icon
for many reasons. The Dodge Caravan was the brainchild of Lee
Iacocca, the same guy who brought us the Mustang when he was
heading up Ford in the '60s. Designed in the Late 1970's shortly
after Iacocca joined Chrysler, these vans were based on Chrysler's
efficient front-wheel-drive K-platform. With front-wheel drive, it
was far more efficient and roomier than conventional station wagons
and more sensible for driving than a full-size van which is based
on a truck chassis. These mini-vans quickly became popular with
families and especially moms who found them less intimidating to
drive. They quickly swept the market and the sales generated from
these vehicles helped Chrysler recover from bankruptcy in the early
80's. These versatile vehicles were not only great for hauling
families but cargo as well. With removable seats, these mini-vans
became remarkably spacious making them ideal for light-duty
hauling. Dodge introduced the Royal option which was designed
specifically for delivery services and for use by those working in
the trades. The 1986 Dodge Caravan Royal featured here has been
owned by the same family since new and was ordered by the family
patriarch who worked for Chrysler. Because most of these
cargo-equipped vehicles saw daily work duty few have survived and
if they have certainly not in the condition presented by the
vehicle. This Caravan is highly original with only 63,000 miles on
it and a clean Carfax with no accidents. The black finish on this
van presents as original with some light patina and some expected
chips and blemishes, however, the paint has been well-maintained
and still shines with a deep luster. The front and rear bumpers
show only some light patina and the rubber bumper guards are intact
and in great condition. A set of aftermarket running boards and a
set of front fog lights have been added along with protective
stainless-steel rocker panel guards. A red pinstripe adorns the
midline of this van and accents the burgundy interior which
features rich cloth seat upholstery on high-back bucket seats. The
upholstery and carpet show little if any wear. The Royal trim
package bundled several options to focus on the delivery van market
including air conditioning, AM/FM with Cassette Tape Stereo, tilt
steering, cruise control, rear window defroster, and oversized
outside rearview side mirrors. Looking at the interior of this van
it is doubtful it saw much industrial use as there is little if any
wear and tear on the interior cargo space. Under the hood sits the
2.2L SOHC inline four-cylinder engine that produces 96 hp and 199
lb.-ft of torque. The engine compartment is clean and well-kept
with a recent a/c compressor and alternator replacement. The
suspension features power assisted rack and pinion steering with
power brakes with front discs and rear drums. The undercarriage is
remarkably clean and was treated to an undercoating at some point
and there appears to be no corrosion or rust damage to the floors
or subframe. This Caravan presents an excellent opportunity to own
a well-preserved piece of automotive history. It also would make a
fun vehicle to haul toys such as dirt bikes or go-karts. It would
even make a great vintage base for promoting your small business.
