Vehicle Description
Cruisin Classics is proud to present this 1966 Ford Mustang GT
convertible! This is one of only 12,520 Luxury Convertibles
produced in 1966 and it's dressed in the most popular color of that
year - Candy-Apple Red. The paint is a respray in the original
color and is in driver-quality condition, with some imperfections
but a great look from 5 feet away. This Mustang was born with a
White power convertible top and a Red Pony interior and still wears
the same colors. The front of the car features the "new for 66"
grill with horizontal slats replacing the honeycomb from 65. Being
a GT, it has fog lights incorporated into the grill and a
free-floating "pony in corral" at the center. This grill emblem is
unique because it is back-lit by an amber light. From our research,
Ford did offer this illuminated pony as an accessory (not an
option) back in the mid-60s, but theirs were clear, not amber. This
has led us to believe it may be an aftermarket item, but it is
still a very cool look (and it matches the amber fog lights).
Flanking the grill are chrome faux air vents and single headlights,
with turn signal indicators located on the lower valence. The front
bumper is in excellent condition and gleams in the light. The sides
of the car have several GT-only features - GT badging on the front
fenders, sporty stripes running wheel to wheel just above the
rockers with bright MUSTANG lettering in the stripes on the
fenders, and the absence of ornamental trim on the rear quarters.
There is ample brightwork to accent the red paint with dual chrome
side mirrors, chrome door handles, and bright trim on all of the
windows and convertible top surround. The white top with plastic
rear window is in good condition and function as smoothly as it
should. Around back are the iconic Mustang tail lights in sets of
three, a chrome GT gas cap, another gleaming bumper, chrome-ringed
reverse lights, and through-body flared chrome exhaust tips. This
whole beautiful package sits atop factory chrome GT wheels wrapped
in BF Goodrich Radial T/A's - completing the fantastic look. Under
the hood is a clean and stock-appearing engine bay that is home to
a 289ci A-code 225hp V-8 topped with a 4-barrel carburetor and
chrome air cleaner with a 289 call-out decal. The Ford Blue block
is accented by finned Cobra ("Powered by Ford") valve covers. This
V-8 is mated to a C4 Cruise-O-Matic automatic 3-speed transmission
with 3:00 rear gear. Cast manifolds lead to a newer exhaust system
that sounds great. You'll notice while under the hood that this is
a manual steering and manual brake car. On the driver's side fender
rail is the original buck tag for this Mustang and it features a
detail I've only heard of and never seen - this car is stamped as a
"SHOW UNIT"! We are unsure of the purpose of this designation,
perhaps it was made for auto shows or maybe it was made for a Ford
executive. Regardless, it certainly adds to the rarity and
"cool-factor" of this red pony. Open the drivers door and the
courtesy lights illuminate the beautiful red Pony Interior. The
door panels are in excellent condition and feature the popular
wood-grain "knife-handle" door openers as well as speakers with a
color-keyed vented cover-plate. As you enter, you'll notice that a
chrome plate covers the upper rocker and a Ford sill plate leads to
nice hook loop red carpet. Bright trim continues onto the sides of
the very nice red vinyl bucket seats embossed with running ponies
on the backs. The seats show virtually no wear and are quite
comfortable. The rear bench seat is in similarly good condition.
Between the front seats is a full-length center console with
wood-grain trim that houses the shifter for the transmission as
well as a hidden storage box toward the front end. The red vinyl
dash-pad is crack-free and in good condition. The dash features
wood-grain inserts on both the glove box and the instrument cluster
bezel - a GT trait. The glove box contains the emergency flasher
switch and an owner's manual. The working gauges are set in a row
of 5 circles and include a speedometer and gauges for fuel, water
temperature, oil pressure, and amps. In the center of the dash is a
Custom Auto-sound AM/FM/Cassette stereo with Mustang logos. There
is also a Pioneer 6-disc CD changer in the trunk that runs through
the stereo and is controlled by a remote. Beneath the stereo to the
left are controls for the fan and heater - which both work as they
should. On the lower dash to the left of the steering column are
controls for the working 2-speed wipers and switches for the power
top and the fog lights. Directly ahead of the driver is a very nice
3-spoke wood steering wheel with a working horn and pony center
cap. Around back in the trunk, you'll find a hounds-tooth vinyl
mat, red rubber logo floor mats for front and rear, and a red boot
cover for when the top is down. Red first-generation Mustangs are
still pretty easy to find these days, but a 66 GT convertible with
an A-code 289, deluxe interior, and a "SHOW UNIT" designation is a
whole different matter! This beauty has been in a private
collection for the last 27 years and only driven 8,789 in that
time. This is your opportunity to get into a very collectible,
turn-key 66 GT convertible that's ready to hit the road and have
fun today - don't miss out on this one!
