For decades, sports cars with big V8 engines dominated the streets
of America with each manufacturer striving to outdo the others by
producing bigger and more powerful engines. As gas prices steadily
increased in the late 1970's and 1980's and more capable foreign
sports cars with smaller displacement engines began to make their
way into the states, the Big 3 (Ford, GM, and Chrysler) needed to
change up their approach to the sports car market. Each began
experimenting with with smaller engines with added forced induction
to make up for loss of displacement to compete with lighter weight
and more efficient foreign models. Ford's answer to this problem
was their turbocharged 2.3 liter inline-4 engine that eventually
made their way into the top-of-the-line Mustangs and Thunderbirds
of the 1980's. This 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe is an
excellent, collector grade example of these great turbocharged
sports cars with only 7,800 actual miles. As many of these great
sports cars were driven and thoroughly enjoyed when they were new,
finding pristine and low mile examples of these cars is getting
more and more difficult. This Thunderbird Turbo Coupe presents in
overall near mint condition finished in its gorgeous, factory
Bright Red Metallic paint that is complimented by its factory
wheels wrapped in Pirelli P4000 tires. The Turbo Coupe Thunderbirds
received a number of unique exterior touches including their
grill-less front fascia, functioning dual air inlet hood and Turbo
Coupe emblems and trim. This Thunderbirds factory original Charcoal
cloth interior is in near mint condition, as well. Powering this
beautiful Thunderbird is its turbocharged and fuel-injected 2.3
liter inline 4 engine backed by its T5 5-speed manual transmission.
Both the engine and transmission perform just as they should and
deliver a very sporty driving experience reminiscent of when these
cars first rolled off the showroom floor. Switching the suspension
from a more comfort feel to a firmer ride for sportier driving is
easily achieved with the flip of a switch thanks to the
Thunderbird's factory Automatic Ride Control. This Thunderbird
Turbo Coupe is very well equipped from the factory with options
such as: power steering, power 4-wheel disc brakes, automatic ride
control, air conditioning, automatic climate control, power seats,
dual power mirrors, power windows, power door locks, keyless entry,
rear defrost, cruise control, tinted glass, premium AM/FM/cassette
stereo w/ graphic equalizer, automatic dimming headlamps, remote
trunk release, intermittent wipers, and heater/defrost. If you are
in the market for a collector grade foxbody or vintage,
turbocharged American sports car that runs, drives and presents
like it did when it rolled off the showroom floor, then you will
want to take a very close look at this 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo
Coupe.
