The year 1966 was an important one for Chrysler car enthusiast. Not
the least of which was the introduction of the now renewed Charger.
The inaugural version of this muscular machine featured some pretty
interesting standard and optional equipment and was Chrysler's
first mid-sized musclecar for the street. Four bucket seats, with
the rear pair capable of folding flat, meant the Charger could haul
just about anything that would fit through the trunk door. A
console ran the full length of the passenger area, and the
dashboard looked similar to something from an imaginary '60s-era
rocket.
The 66 Charger featured a unique fastback roofline with hidden
headlights, a full-width front grille, and a recessed rear window.
Its design was considered futuristic for its time and set it apart
from other muscle cars.
This Charger has a powerful big block 383 under the hood that has
an aluminum intake and Holley 4-barrel carb sitting on top. Topping
off the engine bay looks are Mopar Performance valve covers with
matching air cleaner.
Behind the engine is an automatic transmission that is controlled
via a console shifter. Monitoring the performance are a set of
factory and aftermarket gauges.
The interior of the Charger features a center console that extends
from the dashboard to the rear seat, giving it a sporty and
luxurious feel. Bucket seats at all four seating positions along
with fold down rear seats provides plenty of room for passengers
along with cargo space.
Visually striking and offering powerful engine options, its sales
figures were modest compared to other muscle cars of the era.
However, its unique design and legacy would pave the way for later
generations of the Charger to become more iconic and widely
recognized.
Cultural impact of the 66 Charger gained further recognition
through its appearance in various movies, TV shows, and pop culture
references over the years making this Dodge an icon amongst
collectors. The high-performance Dodge Charger is capable of
impressive acceleration and speed, making it a popular choice among
car enthusiasts who value both style and performance.
