Vehicle Description
1958 Chevrolet Apache 3100 Pickup
The Chevrolet Task Force was Chevrolet's successor to the Advance
Design trucks. The Task Force Series ran from late 1955, (second
series), through 1959. At GMC locations, it was called the Blue
Chip Series. The 1955 second series offered standard options and
add-ons such as 12-volt electrical systems, the first V8, (265
cubic inches), and Fleetside beds in 1958. All light-duty trucks
are now called "Apache", medium-duty trucks called "Viking", and
heavy-duty trucks called "Spartan".
For consignment, a nicely buttoned up 3100 Apache Pickup from
Chevrolet and right out of 1958. A few changes in the powertrain,
improvements to the body, some custom touches added to the
interior, and upgraded Mustang II suspension up front. Appearing
from the side view a bit back heavy, there are large and in charge
tires and wheels there as well as pontoon style fenders for the
step side bed. A customized truck, with nice paint and the ability
to rip it up a bit and haul some stuff or just some ass!
Exterior
Clean burgundy paint covers this step side version of the light
duty Apache. Hooded headlights flank either side of the now gray
painted egg crate grille below both from a 1955Apache. All
trimmings of chrome have long since been removed as well as the
front bumper, which now has a custom roll pan in its place. A
bulbous hood, again from a 1955 model, sans badges or ornamentation
now bridges the gap between the fenders. A few faults are noted
here and there, such as scuffs, scrapes, a few chips in the finish
and noticeable bodywork is seen on the rockers and bottoms of the
doors. A wonderful wrap-around windshield and an integral sun visor
are seen on the cab area,as is the larger than life rear window on
the cab. Right behind is the black vinyl tonneau covered flareside
bed with a burgundy plywood flooring and custom fabricated but
unpainted wheel houses. The entire exterior of the bed is very
straight and gaps are well minded. Out back, the tailgate functions
and there is absolutely no rust on the exterior of this truck.
14-inch highly polished chrome wheels with chrome moon caps are
wrapped by staggered width BF Goodrich T/A radials on all 4
corners.
Interior
A complete redux with silver steel making up the majority of the
door panels with a dark burgundy insert holding the padded armrest
and shiny handles. Inside, dual 1985 Buick bucket seats finished in
burgundy velour with nicely shaped bolsters flank a red center
console with twin cupholders and a padded armrest. These seats now
float in an ocean of black rubber matting and upon closer
inspection we note some heavy surface rust in a few areas of the
door step cut-ins just below the flooring. Fronting this is a
silver metal dash holding the factory single fan design instrument
cluster with a row of knobs and pulls below. To the driver's lower
left is a trio of white face aftermarket gauges and to the driver's
right are the heater slides and a modern AM/FM/CD stereo. A later
model blue steering column with a 2 spoke bowtie badged steering
wheel is seen, and the shifter for the transmission remains here
too. Above is a custom headliner in black mesh perfectly surrounded
by silversteel as far as the eye can see.
Drivetrain
A orange/red painted 350ci V8 now sits within the clean engine bay.
This is topped by a single 4-barrel carburetor that is perched atop
a Weiand intake manifold. There has been a mild performance
camshaft installed and has a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission
on back. Way back nestled under the bed is a 10-bolt rear axle.
Undercarriage
All well preserved underneath with nice black painted steel, hints
of the wood which lines the bed, and a peppering of surface rust
where the paint was thin or things remained in a natural finish.
Some light invasive rust is noted in a few areas of the wheel
houses, but not enough to cause any alarm at this point. A new
steering linkage system is added, and dual exhaust with glasspack
style muffler easily handles the exhale of spent gasses. Leaf
spring suspension is still on the rear along with power drum brakes
and up front is now a Mustang II independentfront suspension with
power disc brakes bolted on.
Drive-Ability
A hop inside and where it immediately started, sounding smooth, and
was ready to go onto gear. A move of the column shifter and we were
cruising. A smooth ride, nice handling, and overall comfortable
interior are highlights for this once utilitarian hauler with all
functions operating as they should.
Driving this truck is a great experience as it will take you back
to a time where trucks were mainly used on the farm, or strictly
for work. This example can certainly be used for work but would
also be very comfortable showing up at the country club, or a drive
in night, and it will be a head turner. A nicely done restoration
with great upgrades. All just right baby bear.
