Vehicle Description
1956 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria
The Ford Fairlane is an automobile model that was sold between 1955
and 1970 by Ford in North America. The name is derived from Henry
Ford's estate, Fair Lane, near Dearborn, Michigan. Over time, the
name referred to a number of different cars in different classes;
the Fairlane was initially a full-sized car, but became a mid-sized
car for the 1962 model year. The mid-sized model spawned the
Australian-built Fairlane in 1967, although in that market it was
considered a large car.
Any time we get stunning 50's era Detroit metal into our Classic
Auto Mall showrooms, it tends to attract a lot of attention and
usually doesn't stick around very long. This is a 2 owner garage
kept 1956 Ford Fairlane Victoria that has been the beneficiary of
an earlier restoration, but still shines and has minimal smoothing
filler. It's the perfect car for anyone who wants an accurate,
exceptionally well done restoration for half the price of doing it
themselves. Having not been driven much in the last 10 years due to
the passing of our consignor's husband, this chrome laden boulevard
cruiser is a piece of very ripe low hanging fruit that is our
Classic Auto Mall tree.
Exterior
With a blending of Sunset Coral and Colonial White this car takes
the term paint job to another level. Very well done with minute
inclusions, and a great shine. These areas of 2 tone are bordered
by the use of a chrome side spear swoop, chrome rocker trim, chrome
window surrounds chrome badging, and very nice redone chrome
bumpers. From the front of the hood cloisonne shield, to the jet
age hood ornament, and Fairlane badging in your grandmother's
handwriting we are in drive-in-heaven. On back, the rear is graced
with a continental bumper, nice and wide and housing a metal
encased two tone white and coral tire surround. Exhaust tips are
through the bumper back here as well, which is very snazzy. Wide
whites with dish caps and more cloisonne shields are sitting on all
4 corners. Very straight steel panels, great consistent gaps,
slight hint of fins, and just perfectly placed paint patterns, get
your DA greased, put the cigs in your sleeve and let's move to the
inside....Ca, ca, ca, cool man!
Interior
Pushing the pristine chrome button, and pulling on that handle, we
move the swoop spear swoop out of the way so we can slide on in.
Feasting our eyes on this very 50's, very nicely done interior, I'm
in love..me tender. With masterful use of black, coral, and white
vinyl, and of course plenty of chrome borders, the door panels have
me all shook up. Moving to the seating, I love the NOS original
coral mosaic inserts and the wonderful white vinyl bolsters and
surrounds and it is just killer. A split bench in front and a rear
solid bench swim in a sea of wonderful black thick pile carpet.
Gazing forward we greet the contrastingblack dash in all steel. The
gauges are very clean, sport chrome bezels, and all work with the
exception of the clock. An original steering wheel in black is
bordered on the inside by the pie shaped horn ring that leaves a
1/3 portion out at the top just to keep your interest. A tight
headliner in white floats above the interior and shows no stains.
Also seen is the chromed basket handle emanating from the front of
the B pillar and stretching across the top to the other side. Pure
Crown Vic fer sur. Well that's alright baby, let's go to the
Drivetrain section.
Drivetrain
Some time was spent here with a nifty engine bay restoration, and
it includes a 292ci Thunderbird V8 with a block in red, and shiny
black all over. A simple metal air cleaner covers a 2-barrel
carburetor. Ford-O-Matic provides the 3-speed automatic
transmission and it throws power back to a Ford 9 inch 3.22 geared
rear. Hoses, electrical wiring, and radiator are also well sorted,
and all shining brightly. Cruising up past your friends in this car
will leave them in heartbreak hotel envy.
Undercarriage
Sometime prior to the time we release this car to its new owner,
I'm going to eat my dinner off the underside..yes it's pretty clean
and rust free with just a slight hint of patina and some road dirt,
but I'd still put my dinner on it! Structurally very sound, the
front suspension looks new, (but it may not be), and we see 4 wheel
drum brakes, independent coil spring suspension in front, and leaf
spring in the rear. Dual stock exhaust is snaking its way from
front to back with Smithy mufflers on tocreate just the right note.
Just a nice job performing the restoration under here. You ain't
nuthin but a hound dog...
Drive-Ability
Our crack in-house decoder and car expert fought over who was going
to drive this one! And we resolved it by both doing so. This car
started without a hiccup, shifted beautifully, had a great cushy
ride, and was comfortable to sit in. It's definitely a boulevard
cruiser, could be a show-er, but for now I'm sticking to driving
her. We found the radio non functional, as well as the clock. I
can't help falling in love..with this wonderful car.
We have a turnkey classic that drips with mid century styling,
plenty of chrome, an awesome interior, beautiful and fairly smooth
running engine, great paint and color combination, and ready to
roll. Now I'm really all shook up ohh hoo hoo ooh yeah.
