Vehicle Description
1987 Ford Mustang GT Hatchback
The third generation Mustang is frequently referred to as the
Foxbody Mustang since it used the new Fox platform. Foxbody
Mustangs were produced between 1979 and 1993, the longest
generation of Mustangs to date, though there were several
significant body updates made throughout this generation. Though
the Foxbody Mustangs were popular at their release, they've only
gained popularity in the years since then. The Foxbody has gained a
reputation as a modders dream, and with the right modifications
this Fox can fly.
Here at Classic Auto Mall we await with worms on our breath, (uhh
baited breath actually!), to see what will come through the door
next. Well every now and again we get a car that is simply a
stunner.. so now we give you on consignment, and could be yours, a
1987 Fox bodied Mustang GT hatchback and all buttoned up. With the
famous 5.0 Liter V8, rebuilt automatic transmission with both being
nicely maintained, and sporting a few tasteful cosmetic upgrades
this foxy 'Stang is calling your name!
Due to varying emissions control devices being removed, please

Exterior
A color change to 1993 SVT Cobra code RD adorns this car, and in
layman's language this translates to Teal. This Teal covers the
entirety of the body as well as the ground effects. The paint is
excellent and covers straight steel sculpted panels which make up
this iconic iteration of the Fox bodied Mustang. It does not get
much better than this well well minded gaps, straight rust-free
panels, and new diamond clear plastic headlights flanking the SVT
Cobra style front bumper, excellent lower body and rocker flanges,
a pristine aftermarket pop up sunroof top and sloping rear
hatchback complete with an aerodynamic rear wing. Factory badging
denotes the 5.0-liter mill that sleeps below the hood...shhhhhhhh,
you'll awaken the beast! Speaking of the hood, it's a Cobra R style
with a molded in SVO scoop, giving us all that mid-80's muscle
look. Black accents with door handles and window surround trimmings
contrast to the Teal and show off the car as it should. Wrap around
altezza style rear tail lighting is perfectly placed above the
integrated body matching bumper. 16-inch bright and shiny
Centerline wheels are on all 4 corners, all wrapped in deeply
treaded blackwall radials.
Interior
The mid 1980's brought us some wild stuff, but then there were
highlights like the interior of this classic sly Fox with door
panels in gray with black control panels, black accent panels and
black door handles and switches. This continues for the seating
with titanium gray tweed high back buckets, sporting tuck and roll
inserts and smooth racing style wrap around bolsters. These seats
have power lumbar controls so you can get it just right baby bear.
A complimentary light gray console races past toward the dash and
has a slightly askew ashtray door and a black accenting surround
for the B&M ratchet shifter. On the dash we have a mixture of
lower titanium dash front panels which match up to the door panel
line, and above padded dash top. Extensive use of the mid 1980's
square and rectangle design is used for the dash, with all controls
and gauges in either of these simple geometric forms. All is laid
out exactly the way it left the factory, save for the aftermarket
AM/FM/CD stereo and white face heater dial highlights. The dash is
near pristine, as are the carpets which float all seats in a
perfect sea of gray thick pile comfort. Titanium side panels on the
rear frame a rear 2 plus 2 bench which is shoehorned into the back
of the car, but is comfortable once you get there and it can also
be folded down to haul your trophy home from the next car show.
Drivetrain
An original 5.0 Liter V8 with EFI to feed this mill, and we are
ready to take on some serious stuff. A rebuilt AOD 4-speed
automatic transmission now installed on the back, and this pushes
power back to a Ford 8.8-inch 4.10 geared rear axle featuring
TracLoc. All in all just good condition under this hood, with a
chrome finished fenderwell cold air intake to help the mighty mill
breathe.
Undercarriage
Some slight surface rust on the usual suspects, but certainly
unremarkable and mostly straight unadulterated gray and black
structurally sound steel unibody and rockers. We note some slight
surface rust on the suspension components and invasive rust is seen
in a few areas of the flooring. A like new exhaust system snakes
its way rearward and features H piping and Flowmaster mufflers
which are fed by headers. An Eibach lowering kit graces the
independent coil spring front suspension and 4 link with for the
rear, along with power disc brakes upfront and power drums for the
rear are seen underneath. We note the unibody has been tied with
subframe connectors and that the catalytic converters have been
removed.
Drive-Ability
I couldn't wait to get into this one, as a Fox body 5 liter has a
particular attraction to any car guy, but I get to drive it. It did
not disappoint with a quick lighting fire and and a smooth idle.
That said, we were off with a slip of the shifter intoD. Plenty of
power, great handling, and I felt like a million bucks behind this
wheel with the horn not honking being the only mechanical fault. I
had to remind myself that I actually do have real work to do here
in our Hallowed Halls, so I only enjoyed a few extra parade
laps.
If you are in the market for some late 80's eye candy in the form
of a very nicely built Fox body 5.0 liter GT look no further, as
this one is a beauty. Even with its few minor faults it will be
hard to find one better than this example gracing our Hallowed
Halls. Nearly like new but from 1987. Award winning fer sur.
