The limited production ZR-1 was first introduced in 1990 and has a
Lotus designed LT-5 aluminum 350 V-8 engine with four overhead cam
shafts and 32 valves. ZR-1's were hand assembled by Mercury Marine
in Stillwater, Oklahoma. At introduction, the car was the world's
fastest production auto at nearly 200 mph and a 0-60 time of just
over 4 seconds while the durability was proven by running at over
175 mph for 24 straight hours. It was labelled "The Porsche Killer"
and "King of the Hill". Car and Driver even called it "The Corvette
from Hell". The ZR-1 has a 3 inch wider rear track than stock
Corvettes, newly designed doors, and a new rear fascia with
rectangular taillights while including every Corvette comfort
option. Handling on road or track has to be experienced with the
selective ride control suspension and lowered stance. All ZR-1's
have a 6 speed manual gearbox.
Chevrolet priced the ZR-1 option in 1994 at over $31,000 which
nearly doubled the cars MSRP to over $68,000. Buyers often paid a
premium.
