Introduced at the Paris Motor Show as the replacement for the Dino 246 in 1975, the 308 has a solid place in Ferrari history. Designed by Leonardo Fioravanti, who had previously penned the 365 Daytona for Pininfarina, the 308 quickly won over many enthusiasts for both its looks and performance. The 308 shared both the tube-frame platform and double-wishbone independent suspension with the Ferrari 308 GT/4 and power was derived from the 2,929cc transversely mounted V8, producing more than 240 horsepower and a top speed of 156 mph. Four-wheel disc brakes ensured excellent stopping power, and when mated with the five-speed manual transaxle, the 308 provided a driving experience few other cars could match. With hardtop GTB and targa-roof GTS variants, the 308 made waves from the moment it was released.
Beginning in 1980, Ferrari adapted Bosch Fuel Injection and electronic ignition to the 308’s powerplant, adding an “i” to the model’s name. Often considered to be more reliable than earlier models, the i variants were built in limited numbers before the 308 Quattrovalvole was released in 1982. The 308 is often associated with the TV show Magnum, P.I., as the model played a starring role in the series, capturing the hearts of many as Tom Selleck chased down criminals in Hawaii behind the wheel. The 308’s iconic wedge shape was a staple of the 1980s, ensuring the 308’s collectability and desirability for years to come.
The magnificent 1980 Ferrari 308 GTBi featured here is finished in Rosso Chiaro over Black Connolly leather. This particular example was completed at the Maranello works in August 1980 and was sold new through F.A.F. Motorcars in Georgia to an Ohio dealer. Available records show that the 308 was still registered in Ohio as late as 1995, with a recorded 3,256 miles. By 2011, the Ferrari was in Florida, with only 400 more miles added to the odometer. Today this desirable Ferrari 308 GTBi presents wonderfully with only 4,427 miles present on the odometer. The original warranty and service book verifies that the 2.9 liter DOHC V8 engine is numbers matching. The original owner’s manual, service records, tool kit, jack, and original window sticker also accompany this investment caliber 308. We are proud to offer this outstanding 1980 Ferrari 308 GTBi to the most astute collector, investor, or enthusiast who appreciates low mileage and accompanying documentation.
