Vehicle Description
1964 International Scout 80
The International Scout is an off-road vehicle which was made by
International Harvester from 1961 to 1980. It was one of the
earlier SUVs. The Scout was created as a competitor to the Jeep.
Remarkably, the Scout went from a basic idea to production in only
two years. Like the Jeep it had square utilitarian styling but had
cleaner lines. It initially featured a fold-down windshield. The
Scout and second-generation Scout II were produced in Fort Wayne,
Indiana as two-door trucks. They had the options of a half cab
pickup or removable hard or soft top.
For consignment, a former Colorado vehicle in the form of a Scout
80 convertible. This off roader could certainly be called a custom
with its full canvas soft top and factory aluminum hardtop. Read
on, and let's do some off roading!
Exterior
On a really clear day in mid summer, passing you by through the
morning fog and littering the rocks that mark the sides of the
trails...that wonderful color drapes this Scout, so we will call it
Moss Green Metallic. Not to be outdone, chrome trimming in the form
of badges, door handles and the gas cap adds a nice breakup to the
green, and mixes with the black vinyl top nicely. The panels are
all straight but do show a few dings and scratches. The bumpers,
simplechannel stock steel are blackened, and an IH badged mesh
grille hovers above said front bumper. Single chrome trimmed
headlights flank the grille and dress the thin front quarters
nicely. Large 15-inch glossy black drilled wheels are on all 4
corners, and they are wrapped with 235/75R15's. Surely we cannot
forget the factory white aluminum hardtop that shows with a few
scuffs and shows a crack in the left side glass pane.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we are met with Moss Metallic Green shiny
steel door panels with a continuation of the exterior theme. Not to
be outdone by the exterior paint, black low back bomber style
buckets with puffy tuck and roll inserts flank a small black
plastic console and provide a comfortable ride with their
re-padding and re-upholstering. Fronting this unique bench is an
exterior matching instrument panel with a peppering of black face
chrome bezel gauges and a few knobs and pulls for good measure.
More green steel makes up the flooring and sitting proudly atop the
hump are4....count them 4 shift levels. Moving rearward we note an
ivory vinyl bench seat with room for 2 and waaayyyyy in the back is
an added fuel cell under a small black platform. We note this fuel
cell was added due to the factory fuel gauge not working.
Drivetrain
A restored, nicely detailed and painted engine in the form of a
151.5ci 4-cylinder. It is topped by a 1-barrel carburetor sansair
cleaner, and backed by a Borg Warner T90C 3-speed manual
transmission and Dana 18 transfer case. 4.875 geared Dana axles
turn the tires on both the front and rear and a single stock style
side exhaust system handles spent fossils efficiently.
Undercarriage
Peering underneath, we note some surface rust, but pretty well
buttoned up under here with solid frame and floor pans. On the
driver's rocker there was a repair, but is has remediated any rust
that was there previously. Leaf springs with newer shocks are seen
on the suspension, evidence of oiling is noted on the transfer
case, however the oil pan remains relatively dry. Drum brakes are
noted on the 4 corners providing the WHOAH! factor.
Drive-Ability
It's always a kick to get behind the wheel of these 4WD trucks and
this one was truly a pleasurable experience. It lit right up, and
we were off for the test track where it performed beautifully. Good
solid handling, nice acceleration, and even a fairly smooth cruise.
A truly comfortable interior and witha break in the late July
Pennsylvania heat wave we put the soft top down and had our drive
with a smile.
A somewhat wild, unique, tough, yet elegant truck, not unlike the
terrain it can ultimately conquer, and one of the first true SUV's.
This ironically shaped vehicle is instantly recognizable as a
classic 4x4. Get in, turn the key, and get a little mud on the
tires, and certainly turn a few heads!
