2018 Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet in Monterey, CA
Few Mercedes-Benz models are as iconic as the Gelndewagen, and for
good reason. Introduced in 1979, the "G-Wagen" remained
structurally unchanged for almost 40 years as it slowly morphed
from its utilitarian beginnings into a modern-day luxury car still
eminently capable of off-road greatness. In a joint partnership
with Steyr-Daimler-Puch of Austria, the introduction of the "W460"
body-style Mercedes put Mercedes-Benz on a path that board
meetings, flow charts, and conference calls could never have
predicted. Conceived initially as no-frills transportation able to
traverse all manner of terrain, it became a new branch in the
Mercedes lineup, with the Stuttgart concern now finally able to
compete with the likes of Land Rover, which ruled the segment for
over 30 years.
The early 1990s brought the most significant changes to the
Gelndewagen, with the updated "W463" platform and, in 1994, a name
change to simply "G-Class." The platform changes coincided with
customer demand for everyday creature comforts they had come to
expect from other models of Mercedes and the competition. With the
addition of a luxurious interior and a newly refined exterior, the
G-Class did not lose its off-road credibility; in fact, it became
even more capable with permanent all-wheel drive instead of the
on-demand all-wheel drive used until then. Mercedes even began to
offer eight-cylinder and twelve-cylinder engines to create an even
more powerful and luxurious G-Class.
With such a rich history and as a true landmark in automotive
history, it can be challenging to continue to shock the world, but
this is precisely what happened when the Mercedes-Maybach G 650
Landaulet was officially unveiled during the 2017 Geneva Motor
Show. Not only did this stunning vehicle increase the opulent
exclusivity afforded to over 100 years of Mercedes-Benz Landaulets,
it further expanded the already world-renowned capabilities of this
classic all-terrain vehicle. The Maybach G 650 benefits from a 578
mm longer wheelbase that allows for increased interior passenger
space and incorporates the amenities typically found in
chauffeur-driven limousines into this off-roader. While the front
driver's compartment with its steel roof might be similar to other
G-Classes, the rear passengers are able to reveal themselves to the
world via a power-operated Landaulet roof at the touch of a button.
The two individual rear seats offer a high degree of adjustability
from active multi-contouring with an energizing or relaxing
hot-stone massage function, as found in the S-Class sedan. Controls
for the electrically operated glass partition separating them from
the driver's compartment have been integrated into the large
console with thermal beverage holders capable of heating or cooling
over an extended period.
With all the luxurious appointments, the only engine choice to
power the G 650 was the ultra-smooth and powerful Mercedes-AMG
'M279' 6.0-liter biturbo V12, rated at 621-horsepower and
1,000-newton-meters of torque. This powerplant is known for its
jet-like propulsion and represented the most powerful engine
produced by Mercedes at the time. It is a true engineering marvel
with an all-aluminum crankcase, forged steel crankshaft, twelve
twin-spark ignition coils, and air-to-water intercooler, all
constructed by just a single, highly trained factory technician,
whose signature can be found proudly affixed to the engine
cover.
This particular G 650 Landaulet was ordered new in Belgium in
Designo Bright Mystic White II with an Exclusive Black and Red
Nappa leather interior. Following its initial purchase, it was
driven a mere 70 kilometers by the time it was sold to the current
owner in March 2022. It was then imported into the United States
under the Show and Display Rule. A sticker has been affixed in the
engine compartment showing that this car has been modified to meet
the EPA emission standards in 2022 by Wallace Environmental Testing
Labs of Houston, Texas. The vehicle is accompanied by its
importation documents and a letter from the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirming that its entry
request under the Show or Display Rule was granted. Today, the
odometer displays just 224 miles at the time of cataloging.
Offering a near-new car experience, this Mercedes-Maybach G 650
Landaulet is one of only 99 examples produced worldwide and is sure
to demand the astonished looks and attention of onlookers wherever
its travels may take it.
