Engine No. 130.980.12.023766
The legendary "W111" series of Mercedes-Benz Cabriolets was
launched during the 1961 Frankfurt Auto Show. Initially, it was
offered with a 2.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine evolving into a
2.5 before its final evolution as a 2.8-liter installed in the 280
SE - the largest six-cylinder offered in a W111. This increased
displacement ensured more than sufficient levels of power were
available for the ever-increasing amenities, with choices ranging
from power steering to air conditioning, with the 280 SE Cabriolet
representing the pinnacle of Mercedes', and Germany's, personal
luxury car offerings.
This 280 SE Cabriolet was completed on 30 June 1969 as a North
American specification example, as denoted by option code 491, and
was desirably equipped with power windows and the rarely-seen
limited-slip differential. The car was first purchased by Michael
Ryan of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and retained by him
until April 1998. After nearly 30 years of continuous ownership, it
was purchased by Donald Padget, also of British Columbia, with the
odometer displaying just 53,000 miles at the time of purchase, as
per the consignor.
The car was then purchased by what is believed to be just the
fourth owner since new in November 2021, with approximately 102,000
miles at the time. The accompanying digital history file begins in
2021 and illustrates the work completed by the current owner. The
interior wood trim was refinished by Madera Concepts of Goleta,
California, in January 2022 at a cost exceeding $1,500 to bring
back its original, rich luster. Over $3,500 was spent at Dog House
Restoration to restore engine bay finishes with the removal of the
aluminum parts for vapor blasting and plating of various metal
hardware. The original radiator was sent out for repair, replacing
the core while retaining the original tanks. A remanufactured
driveshaft was installed to remedy a vibration felt while driving.
Additionally, the folding soft top and boot cover were replaced at
an invoiced cost of over $2,300. Finally, Palo Alto Speedometer
converted the dashboard clock to run a Quartz movement, with
additional mechanical and electrical work completed by Water Start
Motors, Inc of Santa Cruz, CA. This restorative work brought the
car to a higher level, and naturally, Concours success followed at
numerous events, including winning Best Mercedes at the 2022
Pacific Grove Concours, first in class at the 2022 Chico Concours,
and second in class at the 2022 Legends of the Autobahn. With an
exceptional color combination, further accentuated when the soft
top is lowered, and a set of tan luggage in the trunk, this 280 SE
Cabriolet is an elegant and truly timeless car that can be shown or
driven in effortless style.
