Before Alpina was officially acquired by BMW in March of 2022, the
pair enjoyed a nearly sixty-year collaboration beginning in 1964.
So symbiotic was the partnership, that BMW honored a full factory
warranty on all Alpina-modified models, later selling them
side-by-side with its own M products. Starting with a dual Weber
carburetor setup for the BMW 1500, Alpina founder Burkard
Bovensiepen would lead his company in a partnership evolved past
production car modification into successful efforts as a racing
team. Further distancing themselves a standard tuning shop, Alpina
has been recognized as a full-fledged manufacturer by the German
Federal Ministry of Transport since 1983. One of the finest
creations to emerge from this relationship is undoubtedly the E30
3-Series-based Alpina B6 which saw one of BMW's most celebrated
chassis further enhanced to deliver a superb driving
experience.
Beginning with a M20B25 engine, the stock 2.5-liter straight-six
was bored out to 2.7-liters and upgraded with custom flathead Mahle
pistons, a more aggressive camshaft, harder valve springs, and a
revised ignition system allowing for higher compression. Derived
from the legendary Alpina C2, this drivetrain was utilized for the
Japanese market as the 3.0-liter drivetrain was unable to meet
emission standards. Delivering a potent 210-horsepower, the B6
offered a surprising increase of approximately 40 horsepower over a
stock 325i, which, paired with a close ratio five-speed gearbox and
upgraded exhaust system, provided an exciting improvement in
performance.
As number 40 of only 67 total examples ever produced, this
highly-collectible Japan-only model is offered with only 35,671
kilometers at the time of cataloging. Believed to have been
imported to the US sometime around 2016, this car spent most of its
life in Japan. Immediately distinguishable from a standard model,
the B6 offers sportier front and rear spoilers while classic Alpina
wheels and gold stripes complete the exterior transformation. The
interior offers enhanced striped cloth upholstery with upgraded
sport seats and an Alpina branded steering wheel situated amongst a
well-appointed interior. With exceptional rarity, this Alpina B6
not only delivers an enhanced driving experience but also
tremendous collectibility and provenance from Bavaria's famed
tuners.
