Vehicle Description
1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible
The word Cutlass is defined as a short curvy one-edged sword that
was used by sailors. The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme was the best
selling car in Olds history. With its clean lines and numerous
model offerings, it is clear to see why.
For consignment, a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible in very nice
condition. Nice paint, good chrome, a numbers matching engine and
correct transmission and the addition of a W30 hood and working
factory speed minder all point to 2 thumbs up for this frame off
restored car. Making this car a rarity is the 455ci L33 V8 under
the hood and still wearing all of its original sheet metal, this
rocket of an Olds ready to shoot for the moon
Exterior
With straight steel side panels, and trunk and hood with consistent
gaps and covered in a trim tag matching Twilight Blue Metallic
respray, there are very few faults to be noted here. Certainly not
perfect, but amazingly preserved and looking nearly showroom new
with a blue canvas top covering the passenger compartment and is in
good condition and has been fitted with a glass rear window. Up
front a split grille is flanked by dual headlights on either side,
and a large chrome bumper below. All is nice and tight and in good
alignment with no rust or fading on chrome. Just above is the tooth
equipped hood ,so watch your head while working underneath it, with
a dual scooped ram air style Oldsmobile W30 fiberglass hood with
dual white decal stripes. The blue canvas roof sweeps down to meet
the trunk lid and bright shiny polishing trimmings surround the
windshield as well as the passenger compartment. Bringing up the
curved to a point rear is a wrap-around bumper that has the
taillights embedded within it. On all 4 corners are Oldsmobile
Super Stock II charcoal and chrome wheels with raised white letter
BF Goodrich rubber all in 14-inch format.
Interior
Opening one of the doors we are greeted by very nice textured light
blue vinyl with embossed panels and a small amount of thin nice
chrome accents, an applique insert with CS badging, window cranks,
and dark blue carpeting below. Slipping inside we get behind the
original 4 spoke wheel which fronts a very clean and original dash.
This presents to us in dark blue and is loaded with plenty of wood
applique for the gauge cluster. Below and to the right of the
cluster is more applique for the heat and AC, and centrally located
in the dash is the factory AM/FM radio, meanwhile, in front of the
passenger we see a glove box. Fronting this dash is a crisp and
clean light blue split back bench seat with splendid stitching and
buttons. The back has a matching rear bench that appears to never
have been sat in and these all float in a sea of clean blue
carpeting. A shout out to the trunk with its gray liner and full
size spare tire. Sit back and turn on the AM/FM radio and breathe
in the 1970 design you are now surrounded by!
Drivetrain
The original and numbers matching L33 455ci Rocket V8 sits between
the fenders and has been fitted with correct 403 686 casting
cylinder heads..A quadrajet carburetor is on.Covering the fuel and
fossil mixer is the W30 ram air induction air cleaner assembly. A
circa 1976 TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is behind, and all
of this resides in a cleanly restored engine bay. Handling the tire
turning is a 12 bolt rear axle weighing in with 3.23 gearing
Positraction, our consignor states 3.08 gears are in, but the axle
carries the S7 stamping code.
Undercarriage
Nice and straight with all black metal and barelya touch of surface
rust on the axle and suspension parts, but the frame is strong and
sturdy. Consignor stated F41 independent coil springs for the front
and a 4 link with coil springs is on the back provide the classic
Oldsmobile ride. Power disc brakes are on the front and power drums
are noted in the rear and dual exhaust sends spent fossils to the
rear of the car through a pair of stainless steel mufflers.
Drive-Ability
She fired right up and ran like a champ on the test track. Smooth
shifting and good solid quick stop braking is the norm for this car
as is capable handling and wonderful acceleration. I took the
liberty of having my tenure behind the wheel in top down guise and
franky the only things that could have made this drive perfect
would have been if the AC and radio was in operation. Otherwise a
wonderful driver with gobs and gobs of the famous Oldsmobile
torque.
An extremelyrare and well restored example from the year 1970.
Cared for and garaged and tended to as needed. A beautiful light
blue color inside and eye-catching TwilightBlue for the exterior,
with all surfaces in very nice condition. A well-preserved example,
nearly like a new penny, turn the key and start enjoying 1970 all
over again.
