Vehicle Description
1996 Chevrolet Impala SS
Residing on the African Savannah and confronted with a threat, the
sleek, nimble, and fast Impala will take flight to outrun or
confuse its competitor. Aptly named, the Chevrolet version
introduced in 1958, continued to emulate its animal namesake
through years of design modifications, and power options made
available.
This black beauty brings a shudder to my mind. As a frequent
speeder, I've engrained the Impala shape in my mind that I need to
slow down in anticipation it is not the Po Po awaiting my quick
arrival to their radar in their unmarked cruiser, (the Impala). Now
they patrol in anything, so that theory is gone by the wayside,
however it still sticks in my mind! Here we have a 1996 SS, and
it's a 2 owner car purchased by our consignor in October 2018 when
it had a mere 13,022 actual miles. Come 2023 and now gracing our
Hallowed Halls showing a title verified low low 34,333 actual miles
this car is ready to run just like its namesake. Add in some recent
maintenance including a new Optispark, water pump, front seat
covers, and new rear brake hardware and we have a sure fire
winner.
Exterior
Beautifully straight all steel panels draped in deep gloss black
base coat, and clear coat, are seen throughout this car. Virtually
dent free, the car's exterior could be said to be in all but
showroom condition with the exception of the bumpers which have
been hastilyresprayed due to clear coat fading issues. All correct
badging, and neoprene body matching black bumpers are attached,
even a black texture strip is on either side below the beltline.
17" cast aluminum wheels are seen all around wrapped in 255/50R17
black wallsfrom the 5th week of 2022 and add some bright spots to
the corners, otherwise it's all menacing black.
Interior
Gray leather on a 6 way power, (drivers side), wide bucket seats in
front, and a full bench in back shows in very nice condition. The
front seats have recently been recovered and match the showroom
fresh look of the sprawling rear bench. Between these buckets
racing under the dash is a low profile gray plastic console that
houses a small glovebox and the automatic shifter. A leather
wrapped steering wheel, leather door panels, and gray padded dash
are adorning the passenger compartment as well. All power
conveniences, power windows, power steering, power brakes, power
locks, and an updatedAM/FM/CD stereo by Alpine but the original
radio is included. Many of which the controls are at the driver's
fingertips right on the big doors. Don't forget the trunk as it's
covered in felting and looks just fab!
Drivetrain
The 350ci LT1 V8 with a super smooth 4L60E 4-speed automatic
automatic transmission takes you down the road in a breeze. It has
EFI and a 10 bolt 3.08 posi rear axle. Overall, the engine bay is
clean and has just a bit of corrosion on the cast aluminum parts,
but all is clean. Our consignor notes that a new Optispark unit was
recently installed along with a new water pump.
Undercarriage
Slight surface rust on the cast parts, otherwise like new
undercoated stamped steel abounds for the floor pans. Independent
coil spring suspension is on front, and a 4 link with coil springs
on back. Power disc braking is on all 4's with new rear brake
hardware provide the stopping and dual exhaust with the factory
installed mufflers helps this galloping antelope exhale.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and after a brief warmup, she ran great on the test
track. Nice acceleration, bias free panic stopping, and all
functions were working swimmingly. Our consignor notes that the
check engine light came on during his drive to our Hallowed Halls,
but this issue did not repeat itself for us during our drive.
Seen here at Classic Auto Mall a very nice exterior, and a near
showroom new all leather interior, fair engine bay, and underside,
but a smooth quick starting engine, and almost undetectable
shifting transmission, in combination with all the convenience
options, offers a great combination! Runs like an impala,
accelerates like a cheetah, and has the heart of a lion, can you
say Serengeti Plain? Take a safari to our Hallowed Halls to have a
look at this animal.
