Vehicle Description
1995 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe
The name was not among the thousands proposed, including rejected
options such as Apache, (the original name of the P-51 Mustang),
Falcon, (owned by Chrysler at the time), Eagle, Tropicale,
Hawaiian, and Thunderbolt. A Ford stylist who had lived in the
southwest submitted the Thunderbird name. The word "thunderbird" is
a reference to a legendary creature for North American indigenous
people. It is considered a supernatural bird of power and strength.
Thunderbird Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California also lays
claim to being the inspiration for the name of the car. Ernest
Breech, a Thunderbird Country Club member, who was then chairman of
Ford Motor Company was supposedly deeply involved in the creation
of the Thunderbird. Breech asked the Club's permission to name the
new model after the club and the club consented to the use of the
name.
For consignment, we offer this nearly perfect, very low mileage,
(35,189 original miles), car that is from a good year of the
Thunderbird design. In fact, the Thunderbird was redesigned for the
1993 model year, while continuing on the MN-12 chassis and each
year just kept getting better. This is the final year for the Super
Coupe, a real competitor for the Euro sport coupe and sedan market,
making an unheard of 230hp from the supercharged V6. This was more
ponies than the 4.6 Liter V8 that was availablethis year. A 2
owner, purchased by our consignor from the original owner in 2020,
this aero styled and always garage kept MN-12 bird is ready to
compete with the best of the era from BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. This
car looks, drives, and smells like it just rolled off the lot back
in 1995 and it's...well...super!
Exterior
Presentinglike it was just dipped in deep dark black, the only thing
to break up this calm sea is a thin red pinstripe band that runs
around the car at the beltline. This pristine exterior paint shows
very little wear or faults and the only chrome on this car are the
badges. The window surrounds and sporty mirrors are all finished in
a mix of gloss and satin black. This nicely executed MN-12 design
has integrated headlights, a Super Coupe specific front neoprene
front bumper, and lower fascia with deeply inset fog lights. Moving
to the sides we note long slightly contoured sides along with
optional factory black rub strips and flared outward rocker
moldings. A sloping rear greenhouse glass leads down to the short
for this era of car truck lid and below hovers the wrap-around
integrated tail lights and very muscular rear bumper cover with
Thunderbird SC embossing. 16-inch saw blade style aluminum wheels
are seen on all 4 corners and are wrapped in like new deeply
treaded blackwall rubber. This is a stunning 35,189 mile car
exterior-wise and it is hard to find fault!
Interior
Perfectly aged and well cared for Mocha leather covers the
exaggerated bolsters and inserts for the front buckets. The
driver's seat is fully power actuated with adjustable lumbar and
bolsters and the passengers seat, while manually moved has the same
power lumbar and bolster adjustability. This pattern repeats on the
long clean rear bench which appears to never have been sat in. One
needs to look very closely to see any wear or faults in the leather
although there is slight normal age wrinkling. The very same holds
true for the carpeting which is flooding the floor and presents
very Mocha and very clean. A black topped console speeds up the
center between the buckets and houses a glovebox, the ashtray, the
automatic shifter, and toggles for suspension modes and fog lights.
Moving forward and upward we note the climate controls, a message
center, traction control, and then the factory AM/FM/Cassette
stereo. The gauge cluster, which is all analog, displays all the
necessary functions of engine operation and resides in the driver's
bump out of the dash. Exterior lighting and the heater vents sit
within the black insert and behind an original very nicely
preserved leather wrapped steering wheel. The headliner is nice and
tight and shows near perfect and the door panels are near showroom
and house the power locks, power windows, and power mirror controls
for the doors.
Drivetrain
Sitting proudly in the engine bay, and not to be outshined by the
exterior and interior, the3.8 Liter supercharged V6 capable of
generating 230hp and is fed by EFI. This potent 6 is backed up by a
Ford 4R70W 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. A Ford
independent rear axle with 3.31 gears is waaaay back there throwing
power to the rear wheels.
Undercarriage
To sum it up in a few words, I'll use well cared for with slight
surface rust on the usual suspects. Nary a hint of structural
issues are to be seen. The chassis is supported by independent
suspension front and rear with a combinationof Macpherson struts in
the front and coil springs in the rear. Power disc brakes are seen
on the corners and the factory installed dual to single to dual
exhaust is on for spent fossil removal.
Drive-Ability
The car started right up, idled smoothly, and ticked like a Swiss
watch on the power end with smooth acceleration and just as smooth
ride. Much more refined than the prior Fox platform cars, but with
more power than the Mustang of this year and with much more
comfort. A great performer with all options working as they should
and the leather and body hugging bolsters has a way of growing on
you.
Sitting in this car is like going back in time, and one can
definitely still whiff the new car smell in this low mileage, very
well kept, very nice example of the 1995 supercharged Bird. Loaded
with conveniences this is a cool bird, driven somewhat sparingly
and well maintained, this 1995 car has plenty of flight time left
in her!
