Vehicle Description
1981 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
Love it or loathe it, the Camaro Z/28 is one of the most popular
muscle cars ever produced. For years, these cars got more exposure
than the gang from Orange County Choppers, but today it seems
they've fallen on hard times, suffering the cost of that 15 minutes
of fame Andy Warhol warned everyone about. Be that as it may, these
cars have reached their historical low in terms of pricing. With
the exception of the 6.6-liter Trans Am, the Z/28 represents the
best Detroit had to offer in the early 1980s, and an excellent
entry point, given today's heated muscle car market. Thx to
Hemmings!
For consignment, a 1981 version of the Camaro carrying the well
known Z28 moniker. This car has remained true to its included build
sheet with the interior and exterior color, with a refresh on the
paint 5-6 years ago and is presenting in excellent rust-free
condition. While most people felt that performance was no longer on
the forefront, it's hard to pass up a V8 powered 4-speed Camaro and
it even has added T-tops. Also, our consignor is including a new
decal package for this drive anywhere with the AC on honest
presenting skate, which is this last year 2nd generation body.
Due to varying emissions control devices being removed, please
check with your state, county, local or provincial motor vehicle
department to verify the ability to legally register this vehicle
in your area***
Exterior
With its 3-piece front spoiler wrapping around the front of this
car, along with the body matching crash bumper with integrated
single round headlights and outward V blacked out grille shape, the
Camaro had come into its own with styling for 1981. This car bathed
in a respray of the factory White that presents with some
inclusions and roughness to the paint that could possibly be wet
sanded out. 3 tone gold decals are gracing the hood scoop as well
as racing forward from the rear quarters, then dipping down over
the front wheel fairings then meeting up underneath the car on the
lower air dam. Included with your purchase is a set of new decals
for that showroom fresh look. Highlighting the body is the reverse
scooped hood and spats to accentuate the front and rear wheel
wells. Blacked out trimmings have been kept to a minimum with only
the windshield, side and back glass being encircled. Up high on the
roof are mirror finish aftermarket T-tops that can easily be
removed to have some fun in the sun and wind in your hair driving.
Overall the exterior panels are straight and rust free, Z28 badging
is on the grille and tail panel, and gaps are noted as well minded.
Gold finished 15-inch sport rally wheels are slapped on all 4
corners and are wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial TA rubber, and this
beauty has the "look" that every Camaro owner desires.
Interior
Nicely stitched paneled doors are inside and showing off in Doeskin
and are highlighted with chrome bezels for the door releases, power
locks, and mirror joystick. These panels play out with smooth
vinyl, stitched vinyl in tan and chrome trim spears for good looks.
Keeping in theme the front buckets have tan vinyl bolsters and have
deep tuck and roll brown and Doeskin tweed broadcloth stitching for
inserts. A 2 plus 2 rear seat in the same pattern is looking mostly
unused and all are in near excellent condition with the exception
of a slight tear in the driver side front. The square and rectangle
design genre is abundant utilizing some brushed aluminum-like
material for the cluster with dual round gauges in the center and
surrounding smaller rounds at the corners. A/C is noted on the
heater control slides and is still present under the hood, along
with the factory AM/FM/Cassette player and tri-gold Z28 badging on
the glovebox in front of the passenger. The original steering wheel
badged in Z28 with its 4 splines appears with a heavy ribbed wrap
the rim. A vinyl textured center console is providing storage, a
home for the power window toggles, and a place for the black ball
topped shifter as it races between the buckets and towards the 2
plus 2's in the back. Camel tan carpet floods the floors and a
tight brown headliner is floating above.
Drivetrain
Under this hood is all original with the EPA power sucking
regulations thwarted 305ciV8. It is topped by a single 4 barrel
carburetor and has the factory Borg Warner T10 4-speed manual on
back. A 10-bolt 3.42 geared rear axle is in charge of putting the
power to the pavement. Single to dual pipe exhaust and Flowmaster
sans catalytic converter is in charge of the big exhale.
Undercarriage
All nicely preserved and solid as they come with slight surface
rust on some areas that have suffered road rash. For the brakes,
power disc braking is upfront, and power drums for the rear and
independent coil spring suspension in the front works with leaf
springs in the rear. All nicely preserved and well presenting.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter with a smoooooooth idle and off to the test track
where it performed lovely. All was working including ice cold air
conditioning, and fully functioning accessories even the stereo was
kicking out tunes of the era. I flipped on Flock of Seagulls, and
went for a cruise, with my mullet blowing in the cold AC.
If you are looking for a Camaro in classic early 80's style, stop
here, as this is it. All rust free, all well preserved, with its
original build sheet and all running just perfectly. Great
bodystyling for this last year 2nd gen and a fine runner, just
showroom condition here in 2023, right out of 1981.
