Vehicle Description
1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 Cabriolet
In 1984 the W124 range of cars superseded the erstwhile W123 which
had enjoyed a successful 11-year production life. At launch the
W124 range consisted of saloon and estate variants only. A svelte
coupe version appeared in 1987 with the cabriolet finally launching
in 1992. At that point the A124 became the first new four-seater
cabriolet in the Mercedes range for over 20 years. For somewhile
the W124 range of cars was somewhat clumsily referred to by
Mercedes as the "intermediate" range. It wasn't until a year after
the cabriolet's launch that the cars started to be officially
marketed as the E-Class for the first time. The cabriolet was based
directly on the coupe and yet, in true Mercedes fashion, over 1,000
parts were substituted mainly in the name of stiffening the car to
within an inch of its life. The loss of the 28kg roof panel was
compensated for by the addition of 130kgs of stiffening
paraphernalia. This even included four different vibration
absorbers to help ensure none of the usual scuttle shake and
vibration suffered by convertibles would blight the A124. Such was
the obsession with word-class engineering values at Mercedes Benz
in the early 90's.
For consignment, a 2 owner documented low mileage car, (42,176
original title verified miles),...this car is merely being broken
in. Couple this with an owner that obsessively cared for and
maintained this car for the last 20 years and always kept it safely
stored in the garage. You have a car that has a lot of value...low
mileage, and REAL reliability.
Exterior
Design wise ahead of anything else of its time, this Brilliant
Silver Metallic painted car looks like the part of a well
maintained and garage kept treasure. A few visible scuffs and chips
are noted throughout but nothing bad enough to kick the car out of
bed for eating crackers. All panels are essentially perfect, and
doors slam with that quintessential Mercedes-Benz "thud". The black
canvas top works perfectly, and if you were not watching it, you
would swear it was never even on the car as it just totally
disappears! When it's up there is no visible evidence of bows or
mechanisms. With darker silver bumpers, lower body cladding, and
premium chrome, this car screams you have arrived, but not with the
noise of its powerful engine or throaty exhaust, but with just
class, and quality of build. Very similar to a debutante floating
down the curved stairway ready to come out and sign her name on the
social register. Rounding out the exterior are 15-inch alloy wheels
with a heavy amount of corrosion and clean coat degradation wrapped
in 195/65R15 rubber from the 45th week of 2020.
Interior
Gray leather wraps electronically adjustable seats and will
accommodate virtually any size driver. These seats have only
minimal wear in the form of age wrinkling, but no tearing or color
rub off. A burl center console houses the power window option,
power convertible top, as well as the power mirror control, gear
selector, radio, AM/FM/Cassette player, and climate controls. The
electronic dash has virtually every monitoring light one could
imagine, and holds on to the analog speedo, clock, tach, oil
pressure, fuel gauge, and engine temp gauges. Fronting this dash is
the all business black steering wheel with levers for cruise
control, intermittent wipers, and steering column adjustment. More
gray carpeting floods the floors for both the front and rear seat
passengers and looks almost as good as the day it left the
Sindelfingen factory thanks to the carpeted floor mats. Hand built,
and a mere 1,698 produced in 1994, and you have something very
special. My dear, increase the output of the concerto music on the
Mercedes stereo.
Drivetrain
A Mercedes M104 3.2 Liter inline 6 engine, all hand built, produces
217hp and is fed by EFI. On the back is a 4-speed automatic
transmission that sends power back to a 3.07 geared rear axle.
Undercarriage
Some very light surface rust is showing up here and there, but it
is all definitely unremarkable. Ground effects per se with the
floor pans which are a nice patina factory charcoal black and no
rust seen anywhere on these. Independent double wishbone suspension
with coil springs is upfront, and independent 5 link coil spring
suspension on back. Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability
I climbed in and breathed in the personality that this car exudes.
Sometimes feisty, always ready for whatever, and one could expect a
stellar performance from this car when they were put to the task at
hand. This car performed beautifully for a 6 banger, and with the
top down I felt like a million bucks. An overall excellent car with
not a frown to be noted.
Looking for a reliable sporty nimble convertible that will go on
for another 200 to 300K miles? Stop looking and get in here, it's
going to go quickly just like it did on the test drive.
