Vehicle Description
This 1935 Packard Eight Phaeton is a beautifully restored pre-war
convertible that has been deemed a "Full Classic" by the Classic
Car Club of America (CCCA). 1935 was a transitional year for
Packard. The independent American luxury automaker had seemed to
survive the effects of the Great Depression, which had claimed the
end of (or would soon) many Packard contemporaries including
Peerless, Marmon, Pierce-Arrow, Stutz, and Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg.
See, when the Depression tanked the stock market it also would tank
the markets for high-end luxury goods, such as the luxury cars
manufactured by Packard. Perhaps the most notable change for
Packard in 1935 was the addition of an entry-level model to its
lineup, that being, the One-Twenty. While the new 120 models sold
like hotcakes, far out-selling Packard's entire production from the
previous year. Whether it was a reinvigoration of Packard through
the new 120 models or the start of a turn of circumstances for the
economy, demand for Packard's entry-level Senior model, the Eight,
also saw a substantial boost. The 1935 Packards were also
redesigned considerably from the previous generations. At the nose,
the radiator housing with chrome grilles were slanted five degrees
to the rear, which gave the cars a bit of an aerodynamic look. The
hoods also featured an updated chrome louver setup which also
modernized the design quite a bit. At the rear, the rear fenders
were given a facelift, now with more of a "pontoon" look that
advanced the design of the '35 Packards and emulated the future
direction of automobile design. In total, Packard produced 4,781 of
its 12th Series Eight models and although exact production numbers
by body style is not known, this '35 Phaeton is one very rare
automobile. This particular Packard was sold new in Savannah,
Georgia, and thereafter has long been in the cherished hands of
collectors. Powering this '35 Packard is a 320 Cubic Inch L-Head
Inline 8 Cylinder engine paired with a single 2 barrel carburetor
that was said to have created 130 horsepower in its day. The 320
Straight 8 is backed by a 3 speed manual transmission that is
shifted via a floor-mounted shifter. With regards to options, this
gorgeous Packard Eight is nicely appointed. Both of the dual
sidemounted spare tires are enclosed in hard sidemount covers, and
each are topped with chrome outside mirrors that both add to the
luxurious feel of this Phaeton and make it easier to maneuver. With
an auxiliary spotlight and a pair of front driving lights,
visibility is much improved especially while driving at dusk or
night. In the rear, a rear-mounted luggage rack makes it easy to
take your belongings while on a multi-day touring event. In
addition, the dual wind-deflecting wing widows help reduce the
amount of wind in the faces of front seat passengers which is
always welcome on an open car such as this Eight Phaeton. In
addition, this '35 Packard Phaeton comes with canvas side windows
should you need them while cruising. Riding on a set of wide
whitewall bias-ply tires mounted on painted wire wheels and
appointed with Packard Eight chrome hubcaps, this 1935 Packard 8
Phaeton has an absolutely gorgeous look whether its sitting still
or cruising down the road. The beige cloth convertible top is
manually operated and is in wonderful condition. Also when the
convertible top is down, it tucks neatly into a matching canvas
boot cover. The exterior of this Packard has been refinished in a
beautiful Mayan Maroon paint scheme that is accented with cream
striping, thus completing the exterior look of the car. The
interior on this Packard is absolutely stunning! The front
dual-cusion bench seat along with the rear bench with large center
folding armrest have all been reupholstered in an elegant Caramel
colored leather. The matching leather upholstered door panels,
complimentary carpeting, steering wheel, and burl woodgrain dash
are all in fantastic condition and appear to be in their stock
configuration. The instrument cluster is equipped with a 120 MPH
speedometer, temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, amp gauge, and
fuel gauge, along with a clock and an optional factory AM radio.
