For Sale: 1970 Ford Thunderbird in Sooke, British Columbia

Vehicle Description

1970 FORD THUNDERBIRD TWO DOOR LANDAU WITH SPECIAL BROUGHAM OPTION  with  RARE FACTORY SUNROOF

Considered by many to be the most attractive model of the 1967-1971 'Glamour Birds' generation, the sleek fastback bodystyle was only available for the 1970-1971 model years.

For 1970, a new hyper-luxurious interior trim option was announced for the 2-door Thunderbird. As part of a "Special Brougham Option," this interior included high back front bucket seats with center console, cut pile carpeting on the floor and lower door panels, courtesy lights housed in the door panel arm rests, a rear center fold-down arm rest, additional simulated woodgrain trim on the instrument panel, a Three Spoke Rim-Blow steering wheel, unique door and rear quarter trim panels with Hopsack cloth inserts, assist straps on the front doors, and upholstery of Hopsack cloth and vinyl with unique Y-shaped color-keyed inserts and a Thunderbird emblem embroidered in the upper seat back.

Referred to as 'Auxiliary Grille Lamps', these lights were part of the Special Brougham Option, which was available only for the Two-Door models. These lights illuminated with the headlamps, providing very distinctive front end lighting at night. The color-keyed front stone shield and deflector (below the grille and headlights, was color key painted the body color, which was normally a flat gray color (Ford called it "Argent") unless equipped with the Special Brougham Option.

Ford produced less than 17,000 special edition bucket seat laudaus for 1970 and even less of the Special Brougham Interior versions were produced

The extremely rare power operated sunroof option that is featured on this car was a $453 option back in 1970, which priced out just under the cost of optional air-conditioning, which this car also has. Other options include power windows, tinted glass, body mouldings, traction lock differential, trunk release, rear bumper guards (rare), 6 way power seats on BOTH  bucket seats, AM/FM stereo radio with hidden antenna, and rear window defogger.

As far as condition, mechanically, this car is very good.

The original mileage factory 429 cubic inch engine runs strong and quiet, burning or leaking no engine oil. The car passed Arizona emissions in 2022 to attest to its running order.

The transmission shifts strong with no hesitation or slipping. There are no transmission leaks and the oil is clean and not burnt.

The rear end does not leak.

Power steering and, suspension and front end seems tight and the car drives straight.

Brakes are very strong and the car continues to point straight during stops.

Signal, brake, headlights and running lights work

rim blow steering wheel works

Because the car is sitting outside, I havent operated the electric windows or sunroof, so I will state as inoperable.

The interior has been well taken care off. Driver's seat could be reupholstered. Some of the piping on the passenger seat is worn. Back seat, window panels, and fold down armrest are in really nice shape. The dash has some hairline cracks but respectable. The dash/gauge cluster is in really nice shape. The carpet is in nice shape. The headliner is acceptable but has two small areas of damage. The passenger door panel is in very nice shape. The driver door panel has some damage.

The 'cayman' vinyl roof looks presentable but could be replaced as the Arizona sun has faded and damaged the top.

The paint for the most part is faded from the Arizona sun and could use a good buffing. There are no dents on the body, but numerous scratches. Some of the body trim has dents.

There is no apparent rust on the car. The underside looks like that of a desert car, with the factory insulation undercoating still present. The front fenders and the rocker panels are excellent with no signs of damage, rust or filler. The rear quarters are in excellent shape for the most part and the trunk is very clean with no rust evident around the wheel wells or elsewhere.

The glass is all in excellent condition.

I have the original gate release, warranty card, and extensive maintenance history from the original owner that i will post on my Youtube site. From the maintenance history documentation, I believe the mileage to be original.

I have more videos and pictures on my youtube channel, "1970 Ford Thunderbird with Factory Sunroof" or click on the YouTube links below. Keep on the look-out as i will be posting additional media.

I purchased the car from the original owner in Arizona and although I have  the car in Canada, I have not registered it, so I still retain the Arizona title, which will pass with the sale.
