Vehicle Description
2005 Chrysler Crossfire Convertible
The Chrysler Crossfire is a rear-wheel drive, two-seat sports car
that was sold by Chrysler and built by Karmann of Germany for the
2004 to 2008 model years. Developed during the union of Daimler and
Chrysler, the two-seater is based on the Mercedes-Benz R170
platform which shares 80% of its components with the first
generation SLK. The second generation SLK was built on a new R171
platform starting in the 2005 model year; the R170 platform was
essentially handed down to Chrysler for use in building the
Crossfire. The name "Crossfire" refers to the two character lines
that run from front to rear along the body sides - their crease
directions cross below the mirrors on the door panels. Conceived
during the period of Chrysler's ownership by Daimler-Benz, the name
also refers to the collaboration of the two companies.
For consignment, a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire convertible. With a mere
2873 original miles it is essentially a new car. The break in oil
was changed and it was otherwise stored in a climate controlled
garage for its life entirety. It is an all original car, even down
to its tires which show a manufacture date of 31st and 34th week of
2004. An amazing piece of the Chrysler Daimler merger and sporty
fun is what this car is all about.
Exterior
Reminiscent of the SLK of yore, this ribbed hood long front end
teardrop edged headlights car even has the side vents on the front
quarters with horizontal chromed trim spears just like the
motherland original. A horizontal ribbed swept back grille and body
matching, (Inferno Red Crystal Pearl), integrated bumper all
rounded over nicely creates the slip through the air front end. A
wide chromed windshield surround accentuates the swept back look,
and a black canvas convertible top in showroom condition, all
rounded over like the hardtop version, and working its way to the
rear deck, aero slicing is always the key. Speaking of which, a
thin spoiler adds to the sportiness as does the rounded tail lights
and another integrated body matching curved rear bumper, with dual
centrally located exhaust exits. Here the German influence appears
more Porsche Carrera, but still distinctly Chrysler. 18-inch wheels
in front and 19-inches on back are wrapped by BF Goodrich tires
which are like new, but are the originals, on all 4 corners.
Interior
Inside quality smooth two tone light and dark gray leather wraps
the high back buckets for the two passengers. These chairs have
power adjustments. A sexy silver console races forward to the dash,
and has a glovebox in back and also houses the parking brake lever
and shifter. As it rises to the dash, all "aluminum" plastic parts
create a central panel and a machine age look. Here we have the
climate controls and the factory AM/FM/CDl stereo. More toggles are
present for various functions and conveniences. To the dash front
where we see green backlit instruments in analog format with
digital display inserts to show odometer and clock. Noted the extra
shift gate to move the shifter to Tiptronic automatic stick shifter
mode. Interior door panels are sleek and simple design with the use
of some more brushed aluminum highlighting and gray leather
abounding. Black carpeting covers the floors, and noted bending the
seats are dual arched brushed aluminum steel roll bars for extra
protection.
Drivetrain
Within the original clean engine bay sits a 3.2 liter fuel injected
V6. On the back is a 5 speed Mercedes Benz 5G-tronic automatic
transmission. The rear axle weighs in at a speedy 3.27 gear
ratio.
Undercarriage
Extremely clean and well cared for with no rust, surface or
otherwise seen anywhere underneath. A stainless steel dual exhaust
snakes its way rearward to the center dual exit. Independent coil
spring suspension is on front, and a 5 link coil spring suspension
on the back. Power disc brakes are reserved for all 4 corners. No
runs, drips or errors under here!
Drive-Ability
As expected it fired right up, and on the test track performed
without a hitch. Smooth powerful acceleration, good handling, and
the tiptronic automatic stick shifter worked well. Straight bias
free panic stopping, and all functions were operational and factory
condition at the time of my test drive.
Emulating a Mercedes SLK is not the worst thing that can happen and
this car morphs that design into a distinctive Chrysler American
sports car feel, retaining the technology from the Benz. Nice
design, low drag coefficient, snappy interior and some good power.
We have a wiener..uh sorry a WINNER! (I got caught up in my
German)
