mid-life update time for the BMW i3. A light refresh for BMW's
composite-chassis four-seat electric city car includes a mild
styling facelift, an upgraded battery for greater range - and an
extra model in the line-up, the BMW i3 S.
Goodness gracious, there's a lot going on here and it's almost all
good. The i3s has an interior that borders on being a concept car.
Exposed surfaces of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic on the doors
and earthy materials on the brutally simplistic dash lend an
airiness that makes for a relaxed driving experience. The only
available package is the Technology + Driving Assistant package
that consists of BMW Navigation with ConnectedDrive Services,
real-time traffic information, and adaptive cruise control with
Active Driving Assistant. Options include a moonroof, Apple
CarPlay, and a blue seatbelt strap (i3s only).
The i3 comes equipped with BMW Navigation Business and iDrive
systems with a rotary controller and a 6.5-inch center display
screen. The system also includes Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite
radio, HD radio, and a USB port. A 16-speaker Harman Kardon
surround sound audio system, Apple CarPlay, and a self-parking
system are optional. The optional upgraded BMW Navigation system
with ConnectedDrive services takes all relevant factors into
account when routing the i3, including battery charge level,
driving style, traffic, and elevation changes. The i3 is capable of
DC fast charming (7.4 kW) and comes with an occasional use chagrin
cable (1.2 kW).
The 2018 BMW i3's powertrain consists of a 33-kWh battery pack that
powers a 170-hp, 184-lb-ft of torque rear-mounted electric motor
that routes power to the rear wheels through a one-speed automatic.
The i3s packs the same electric motor but with more power output,
184 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque.
The BMW i3 S adds addictive acceleration and marginally more secure
handling to an already immensely likeable vehicle. This will be
