Vehicle Description
1987 Buick Grand National
For 21 years, before NASCAR started selling naming rights in 1971,
its top stock-car racing championship was known as the Grand
National, and the name lingered in public usage long after the
series officially became the Winston Cup. Ten years later, Darrell
Waltrip raced factory-backed Buick Regals to claim back-to-back
championships in 1981 and '82. So, it was in keeping with division
general manager Lloyd Reuss's thrust to move Buick's image from a
maker of cushy "doctors' cars" to something more youthful and
exciting when it unveiled the first Regal Grand National at
NASCAR's 1982 Daytona 500.
14,323 title verified actual miles and a consignor stated 3owners
for this runner in black! This car plays every part of that 14,323
miles in the form of very clean paint, replacement filler panels, a
great runner, showroom new under the hood and beyond pristine
interior. However, the car is not without a few flaws, but the
overall package says "Yes! Indeed, I need this!!". Our consignor
has spent over $8,600 in parts and labor to keep things well
maintained, so let's have a closer look and fall in love with the
dark knight.
Exterior
Draped in miles deep full tuxedo black, (just black according to
Buick), attire that was applied by a GM dealership in 1989, this
straight steel paneled, is dressed with slightly worn and corroded
badging, and all blackened trim in place of chrome...the word
menacing comes to mind. A few stone chips on the lowers of the body
can be found on this miles deep black sea of darkness and a haze
spot has appeared on the passenger side of the hood along with
another on the passenger's front fender. A chip guard paint has
been applied to the lower part of the body by the factory, although
the texture is not quite to factory spec, to prevent errant stones
from marring this black beauty. A small spoiler hangs atop the
trunk lid and blends into the sea of black. No T-tops or sunroof to
break up the flawless paint on the roof. Front cowlings, air dam,
and small turbo bulge on the hood just give a hint to the car's
wonderful power. 15-inch chrome and black Grand National wheels
adorn all 4 corners and are wearing deeply treaded 235/60 and
245/60R15 Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires from the 22nd week of 2020
and our consignor's note state that the original wheels and tires
are included. Black trimming surrounds the original installed glass
and is in great condition. MuscleCar power draped in the guise of
luxury!
Interior
Very clean stitched tuck and roll cloth is seen on the power
drivers bucket and manual passenger seat. Gray and black Pallex
cloth covers these seats with gray in the center and black on the
bolsters. This pattern holds true for the back bench as well.
Framing this interior are two long swinging doors that allow access
to the front and back of the passenger compartment. These are
paneled with gray tuck and roll fabric, a mid section of molded
plastic to house the door handle and arm rest as well as a toggle
mirror, power locks and power windows. The bottom of the door is
bounded by black carpet which is carried throughout all the floors
in this car which is very clean and very black. A quintessential
mid 80's square and rectangle dash is housing essential gauges and
is very clean. The center console houses the factory floor shifter
and an added oil pressure and water temp gauge tucked neatly under
the dash. A like new gray steering wheel sits at the end of the
column and begs for you to become one with the car.
Drivetrain
A numbers matching 3.8 Liter V6 intercooled turbo is factory
correct and fills the engine bay splendidly. This mill has been
treated to a few performance add ons such as 60lb/hr fuel
injectors, a Turbo Tweak 255lph fuel pump, an adjustable fuel
pressure regulator along with a RJC airflow distribution power
plate. This mill has electronic fuel injection, stock appearing
heavy duty intercooler hoses, and a numbers matching 4-speed
automatic 200R4 transmission is bolted to the back. Noted also is a
3TP stamped 10-bolt 8.5" 3.42 posi rear in the back to put power to
the ground. Under the hood is clean as a whistle and is showing
power brakes, power steering, air conditioning, and a bevy of
intercooler piping to feed this wolf in sheep's clothing
Undercarriage
Overall very clean underneath with some heavy black undercoating
and slight surface rust in a few areas. It's very clear this car
has been babied, garaged, and rarely driven. The original dual
exhaust system has been replaced with a cat back Pypes stainless
exhaust system to send spent gasses to the rear of the car.
Independent coil spring suspension with power disc brakes is on the
front and a 4 link with coil springs and power drums are on the
rear.
Drive-Ability
As you would expect, this car starts immediately, and idles
smoothly. Put into drive and you can accelerate very smoothly up to
power, and speed. The car rides nicely and handles well and the
seats are ultra-comfortable and clean. My partner in crime and
muscle car aficionado split driving duties with this car so we
didn't rack up too many miles and devalue the car. A few frowns
came up during our time behind the wheel, those being AC that did
not blow cold, a power antenna that would neither raise or lower,
the heater blower was not blowing on the high setting, and wipers
that would not wipe due to the stalk just spinning around and not
actuating anything. That said, the power is amazing, and this black
beauty will give some new era muscle cars a run for the money!
Most examples of these cars have been shredded by a previous owner,
or just plain used up. Quite the contrary on this car with these
original miles, well maintained, a beautiful driver and nearly
showroom new. Add this menacing evil ride to your stable and travel
back to 1987!
