Vehicle Description
Joe Basil Chevrolet and the Basil family have worked tirelessly for
seven decades to bring you excellence in automotive sales and
service. In keeping with that accomplishment, the Basil family has
now expanded into the classic car market. We have constructed a new
building on Transit Road in Lancaster- Depew which has a wide range
of select classics on display for you to view in a
temperature-controlled environment. Still another of our select
classics is this 1969 Chevrolet Impala SS convertible, a very rare
as well as unusual classic Chevrolet. Early in the performance era
and before the arrival of smaller bodied cars, automotive
manufacturers scrambled to fill a void in the publics demand for
high performance vehicles. Early 1960 offerings were generally full
bodied vehicles stuffed with monster engines, referred to as super
stock cars. Through the 1960s and into the 1970s, smaller, lighter
cars referred to as pony cars were introduced in an effort to
quench the publics thirst to own a personalized performance
vehicle. With this accomplishment well under way in the mid to late
1960s, the full body performance vehicle began to decrease in
production availability. This resulted in making them highly
collectable classics in today's market.
Offered here for your consideration is this beautiful 1969
Chevrolet Impala SS convertible. Its rarity is due in part to how
low its production number is. In 1969, there were 14,415 Impala
convertibles assembled. Of these, only 2,455 were SS 427s. This
particular SS 427 has 390 factory horsepower and was ordered as a
zero option unit and was delivered with a three speed column shift
transmission. Our research showed that a hand full of Impala coupes
were delivered with the three speed column shift but to date, this
SS convertible is the only one known to exist with a factory
installed three speed column shift. If another is out there, please
let us know as we have not been able to find any evidence of
another having been produced. This rare gem began its life in
Virginia where it was ordered new and remained through three owners
until it was brought to New York in 2020. Upon entry to New York,
the numbers matching engine had already been rebuilt and the top
had also been replaced. It's fourth owner, an older enthusiast,
installed a factory correct power steering assembly for ease of
maneuvering and also purchased a specially made in dash tachometer
to install since they were not available in this model. A copy of
the original title from Virginia and the correct protecto plate
will be included in the sale and the correct YZ steel wheels and
full hubcaps are also available.
The entire body was resprayed in our body shop, and we take great
pride in the work our forty member shop has accomplished. The
respray was done in the correct Daytona Blue Metallic paint and has
been flawlessly applied over the laser straight body. All chrome
emblems are in as new condition and both front and rear bumpers
have been rechromed. The bold chrome 427 call outs encasing the
front fender marker lights announce the performance engine that is
nestled within. Topping off this attractive exterior are the chrome
rally wheels fitted with bias belted red wall period correct tires.
The grill and light lenses are original as is the body side
molding. The engine compartment is fresh and clean and an upgraded
aluminum radiator with electric fans has been installed. The
correct chrome air cleaner and valve covers are in place as are the
factory exhaust manifolds. The new power steering assembly is
present and the power brake booster which was standard equipment is
present as well. The trunk compartment is clean and spacious with a
correct floor mat and spare tire. The interior seats are done in
black vinyl upholstery, and the carpeting is in as new condition.
The dashboard, door panels and steering wheel are appointed with
tastefully placed amounts of woodgrain applique. The instrument
gauge cluster, tachometer and radio beckon your undivided attention
as you gaze out across the Impalas hood knowing full well what lies
beneath. While seated behind the wheel of this rare time capsule it
is impossible to not feel you are a part of this classic high
performance beauty. Onlookers will constantly complement her due to
the stunning overall appearance and knowing this is the last year
of the SS Impala convertible and the final year of the iconic 427
power plant. Please feel free to stop in and see this outstanding
1969 SS convertible, there's not another like it to be found.
