Vehicle Description
2004 Jaguar XJ8 Sedan
In 2003, Jaguar introduced the re-engineered and newly designed
third generation of the XJ, continuing with the XJ8 model
designation. Designated internally as the X350, it has an
all-aluminum body and chassis, a new V8 engine, as well as greater
interior and luggage spaces. It was the first Jaguar XJ to be
completely designed under Ford ownership and utilizes electronics
and computer-controlled systems sourced through existing partner
suppliers or directly produced by Ford. Air suspension was fitted
at the front and rear, providing adaptive damping as well as rear
self-leveling with computer-controlled ride height and suspension
mode. Dynamic stability control as well as traction control were
standard. Radar based adaptive cruise control was offered. Two-zone
climate control was also standard, with four-zone available on
long-wheelbase models. An optional touch screen interface
controlled default settings, satellite navigation, the Alpine audio
system, and Bluetooth telephone.
Gracing our Hallowed Halls is this Jaguar XJ8 from 2004. A nice 4
door sedan able to whisk any executive or person of importance to
anywhere very quickly thanks in part to its 4.2 Liter V8 coupled
with a 6-speed automatic transmission, full leather interior and a
gaggle of conveniences added in for extra giggles. Oh I certainly
cannot forget to mention the fact that this car has been in sunny
Florida it's whole life, is a 2 owner example, carries a clean
CarFax, has always been faithfully maintained with an "open
checkbook" by Jaguar dealerships, it includes all the factory
manuals and tools, and sports a mere 65,272 title verified actual
miles. The lap of British luxury has arrived in our South mallway,
and is outshining the competition in pure Jaguar form.
Exterior
The X350 keeps much of the same exterior styling as its
predecessor, carrying its rounded four-headlamp bonnet, low
roofline, sloping tail, and wrap-around rear light clusters. From
the front, the various generations can be differentiated by the
shape of the indicator lenses, (rectangular on the X300, oval on
the X308), and also by the shape of the fog lamps and lower valance
air intake, (both of which are more rounded on the X308). The front
and rear bumpers were both changed along with the taillights which
had red/clear lenses rather than red/grey lenses. The grill
surround and badging was slightly changed. The headlight fixtures
also included forward parking lights housed with the brights. All
straight and corrosion-free for the body, bathed in British Racing
Green, (as if there is any other color), basecoat clearcoat that
was applied at the Brown's Lane factory. Chrome is kept to a
tasteful minimum, but the always recognizable "Leaper" leads your
way, carefully perched atop the bonnet. Rounding out our tour are
multi-spoke 18-inch aluminum wheels that are shod in like new
235/50R18 radials.
Interior
While the X308 was lightyears ahead of the largely unchanged XJ40
from days past. The X350 gave all the refinement and luxury touches
an upgrade. Door trim and the design of the center console were
also beautifully designed and are all covered with a mix of Cream
leather and plenty of shiny lacquered burl veneer. Barely broken in
leather covered buckets flank a center console which has curves
aplenty and rises to the center of the dash and integrates
seamlessly. In the center is control central with all the buttons
you'll need to have every function and convenience work with the
push of a button. We note the standard dual zone climate control
and the optional touchscreen with Bluetooth, AM/FM/CD and
Navigation. Light brown Wilton carpeting floods the floors and
above is a felted headliner with a sunroof cutout in the
center.
Drivetrain
Under the hood and many a plastic covering sits the 4.2 Liter DOHC
V8 making a tire shredding 294hp. On the back is a ZF 6-speed
automatic transmission and a 2.87 final drive ratio rear axle. All
clean under this hood.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust is seen sporadically, reserved for the untreated
steel components, but otherwise, solid structural underpinnings,
clean floor pans and a good OEM dual exhaust system are noted.
Independent coil over strut and double wishbone suspension on all 4
corners replaces the seemingly problematic computer-controlled air
suspension that formerly controlled ride height, suspension mode
and rear self-leveling. Power 4-wheel disc brakes bring this luxury
performer to a stop on a dime and will give you change.
Drive-Ability
She fired right up with a growl, and off to the test track where it
did a cracking performance showing snappy acceleration, bias free
panic stopping, and good handling. This car is ONE comfy cruiser
and also a raw horsepower bruiser which can be easily taken on any
superhighway. No issues crept up during our cruise and it wasn't
easy to relinquish the keys. Yes! It's that much fun!
A luxury sedan from across the pond, 2 owners, meticulously
maintained, that famous Jaguar V8 power and lots of leather and
wood burl. Quite right, you're bloody well right!
