Vehicle Description
This 1985 Pontiac Fiero SE is one of those cool cars that
represents an interesting era. After all, not many people expected
a mid-engine coupe from Pontiac, and this was the first year of the
desirable V6 option. So it's quite nice when you can find a
well-respected example offered for an affordable price.
The 2M6 badge on the rear is significant because it symbolized an
update in power. We'll get into more info on that in a moment, but
let's first appreciate the design that instantly got people
thinking about a sports car. The designers set an impressive
benchmark with the sharply-pointed front end, hidden headlights,
and a hint of flying buttress over the rear deck. It's no wonder
Pontiac gave this American coupe an Italian name because this
looked like a more muscular version of the Fiat X1/9. It looks so
good on this example because you can see an overall respect for the
car and good investments like a later respray. Even the details are
nice, like the crosslace GT wheels and quad exhaust tips. And we
like the look of all the black trim that contracts the crisp white
- including the band that encircles the whole car and hides the
door handles.
Unlike the mid-engine European cars, the Fiero's layout does not
sacrifice interior space. This is thanks to a very upright design
that gives you a very airy feeling. But it does still give you the
sporty style where all the controls are aligned with spirited
driving in mind. The seats are exceptionally comfortable, and the
good care means you still feel the terrific bolstering. The same
care can be seen on the other interior elements that coordinate in
a full sea of tasteful gray, like the carpets, door panels, and
dash. It's loaded with great features like power windows, power
locks, a sunroof, wood-like trim on the console, an upgraded
AM/FM/CD stereo, and provisions for factory air conditioning (it
will need servicing/upgrading to blow cold again.) There are nice
driver features like a grippy sports steering wheel, a tilt column,
and a well-placed shifter for the three-speed auto. Plus, the
gauges are upgraded to white-faced units so that the factory
readouts and upgraded readouts all look uniform.
The fuel-injected 2.8-liter V6 was the key upgrade in this car. It
delivers the extra power for entertaining performance in the
relatively lightweight Fiero. It certainly looks the part of a
performance engine with a bright red intake manifold and matching
valve covers. There are even some nice updates, including the air
intake and a stainless exhaust. It warms up to be a strong runner,
and that feels right on a car that was made to hit the road. The
desirable mid-engine layout works with the fully independent
suspension, agile manual steering, and four-wheel power disc brakes
to deliver a nimble driving experience that lives up to this car's
European look and name.
The sale comes complete with extra components and even a magazine
article on this coupe. This is a well-presented Fiero with the
right features and price to be a terrific driver's classic. Call
