The BMW 501 was a luxury car produced by BMW from 1952 to 1958. Introduced at the first Frankfurt Motor Show in 1951, the 501 was the first BMW model to be produced and sold after World War II, as well as the first BMW car built in Bavaria. The 501 and its derivatives, including the BMW 502 with V8 engine, were nicknamed "Baroque Angels" by the German public.
The BMW 502 was the first post-war German car to be produced with a V8 engine.
The 501 had a completely new chassis, front suspension with double transverse arms with torsion bar suspension and a rigid axle with torsion bar suspension at the rear. The four-speed gearbox was not mounted directly on the engine, but was mounted separately between the second and third sleeper and driven by a crankshaft. This construction had the advantage of providing ample legroom for the front occupants, but it also had the disadvantage of a gearshift lever mounted on the handlebar rather complicated, which involved an inaccurate gearbox.
The body was designed by Peter Schimanowski. However, after seeing the prototype, BMW management decided to commission Pininfarina to create an alternative design. However, the Pininfarina prototype was considered too similar to its design for the Alfa Romeo 1900, so BMW decided to keep the Schimanowski design.
The BMW 501 V8 that we are presenting here is a very nice restored example that comes from the collection of a true motor enthusiast.
This BMW is a completely restored specimen: Every inch of it has been carefully cared for.
Inside it is in equally amazing conditions: from the covered seats to the restored panels and the new carpets, all of the time.
From the mechanical point of view, the components have all been overhauled (for example, the engine) and are in excellent condition of functionality
