Vehicle Description
1956 Chevrolet 150 Sedan Delivery
The Sedan Delivery, (also sometimes referred to as a Panel
Delivery), for the uninitiated, is a relatively obscure body style
of a van built on a car chassis. Typically, these take the form of
a station wagon body, but with steel panels where the rear windows
would be. Historically, sedan deliveries had two doors, but modern
versions typically have four. In the beginning, back when it was
enough just to have four wheels and an engine, all light duty
trucks were essentially sedan deliveries. A Model T with a car body
was a car; one with a truck body was a truck. Even up until the
1940's, light duty trucks were basically beefed up versions of
their donor car chassis (Model TT, AA, and BB, continuing the Ford
analogy).
1956 when men were men and cars were...well big steel and chrome
sculpted into iconic designs, that's what! For consignment from
1956, the Chevrolet 150 Sedan Delivery and this low number
production "milestone car" made in a mere 9,445 examples for the
model year. Perhaps it was the desire to own a sporty two door, or
the practicality of a wagon and the ability to haul things, or
maybe both? Either way, a hen's tooth in a beautiful can't miss it
color and design from the Tri Five bow tie era and thisone, with
big block power, some blingy wheels, and those sexy dual 4-barrel
carbs poking out of the hood work together to give this car is
name...the Hollywood Knights Pie Wagon. It's a bit scary how fast
this car will deliver, but it does in many ways, sit on down and
grab a piece of the pie!
Exterior
Like a freshly picked orange, the Hugger Orange paint is exactly
the right choice, because this car doesn't want to take prisoners,
and the finish work ensures that nobody thinks it's still working
for a living. A ton of money has been spent on this project, and
while it's a few years old now, the paint still shines up well and
the flat surfaces that would ordinarily advertise in gold that this
is the Hollywood Knights Pie Wagon are reflective enough to shave
in each morning. Much of the original '56 Chevy trim was retained,
and the restrained look of this particular panel delivery is a big
part of its ap-peel. A custom touch on the hood in the form of ever
so slightly raised steel in the form of the chrome jet that was
once leading the way streaks back to the exposed dual carburetor
set up poking out of the hood. Bright chrome surrounds the custom
horizontally barred grille, sans the front bumper, is flanked by
orange tinted headlights under the steel eyebrow of the front
quarter panels and a custom roll pan hovers below. Just a single
strip of stainless trim on the flanks gives it a traditional look
that's helped by the slight rake and like new Boss Motorsports 18
and 20-inch chromed and polished wheels. Delivery!!! Delivery for
Classic Auto Mall!!!
Interior
When you climb inside, you'll find heavily bolstered racing bucket
seats wrapped in black and orange that certainly contribute to the
heavy hitting hauler car vibe. Matching door panels work well with
the slick black and piped orange look, and the dash is a mixture of
old and new, with the original1956 fan style cluster augmented by
white face Dolphin gauges and the tachometer and supporting black
face gauges mounted atop the dash. Dash central holds the wiper
knob as well as an AM/FM/Cassette stereo helps to pass the time all
within the correct bowtie punched polished aluminum inlay. A
brushed aluminum tilt steering column and rally style steering
wheel add a racy look, as does the Hurst ratchet shifter which is
ideally placed for gear changes. The cargo area is fully
upholstered, offering gray carpets on the floors and custom black
Chevrolet bowties on the side panels, along with nicely integrated
speakers for the stereo system. An 8-point roll bar grows
gracefully from the carpet and will protect you and your passenger
should your high speed delivery go awry.
Drivetrain
The stout 454 cubic inch V8 power plant already with plenty of
chutzpah, it's augmented with dual Edelbrock 600 cfm carb,
Edelbrock tunnel ram intake, and a set of long-tube headers that
bolster its already robust torque curve. Adding some bling are the
chrome stack air cleaners, master cylinder, alternator, polished
valve covers and aluminum radiator. It's backed by a TH400 3-speed
automatic transmission and Ford 9" 4.10 geared Posi rear end, so it
was clearly designed to be driven...fast!
Undercarriage
All clean, meanand rust free with the exception of some slight
surface rust on the usual suspects. A clean and solid frame
provides the support for the independent coil spring front
suspension with power disc brakes and in the back are leaf springs
with traction bars and power drums, it rides and handles better
than you'd expect. Some patina but all looking very good down here
with long snaking Hooker headers feeding spent fossils to the rear
of the car through a pair of Hooker Aerochamber mufflers and ending
in angle cut stainless tips.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and a surprising amount of power which seems to go
on and on with this engine. It was definitely not expected, and
handling and bias free braking was second to none. A smooth
cruiser, head turner, and all functioning interior accoutrements. I
think ill have a second helping...this time extra whipped
cream!
All buttoned up and modified to handle like it's on rails with
updated modern underpinnings, and the retina searing paint, custom
touches and big horsepower producing engine all adds to the allure.
No phone booth necessary to turn this everyday delivery into a
Superman as it's already been done for you. Isn't it finally time
you got your piece of the pie?
