Vehicle Description
1940 Buick Super Eight
The Buick Super was made by Buick from 1940 through 1958 as a way
to combine the longer wheelbase of the Roadmaster with the smaller
engine of the Buick Special. The goal was to prioritize passenger
comfort in a full sized automobile without as much focus on
horsepower. They were also known as the Super Eight due to most
being equipped with the Buick Straight 8 engine. This very cool
1940 Buick Super Eight is a very unique car. Not only is it unique
because it is a vintage Buick but it is also a car where the entire
history is known. That's over 80 years of data backing up all the
way to when it was sold from Stuart Conklin Buick. It was
originally sold to a couple in Hutchinson, Kansas who gave it to
their daughter as a graduation present. She drove the car during
her time at college and then traded it back in to the same
dealership in 1961. That is where it would remain and be used as a
parade car every year by the dealership. It was eventually tucked
away in their warehouse where one day it caught the eye of a master
mechanic in Kansas who was present to sell the dealership some
equipment. He inquired about the car but was informed it was not
for sale. He left them his card with the request that if it ever
were to be up for sale they give him a call. Some time later he
received a call from the dealership about the car and was told to
stop by on Friday if he was interested in buying it. This day was
specifically chosen as the father involved in the business, who did
not want to sell the car, would be out of town. He did as he was
told and in 1980 brought the car home. From there he did an
extensive restoration on the car and got it back on the road with
some mechanical modifications. He drove the car for many years
until he passed away and left it to his daughter. In order to keep
the car in the family his nephew ultimately purchased it and is now
the 3rd owner. The car has continued to be tuned up throughout the
recent years but now it is time to find it a new home with someone
that will cherish and enjoy it. The Super Eight body is in great
shape and during the original restoration it did require some body
work that was all done with lead filler. It wears a nice Black
paint and all of the original chrome and trim is in great shape. It
has a very classy looking exterior and it still has all of its
original features like the working cowl and very cool side panel
trim on the hood. It has a 2 piece front windshield and all of the
glass was replaced in the original restoration. The only noticeable
exterior modifications are the Enkei wheels wrapped in Michelin
tires that were put on in 2018.
The hood opens from both sides to reveal the completely rebuilt
1977 small block 400ci Chevy V8 motor. It runs great and just
received a complete tune up in 2023 and is fitted with chrome valve
covers and a chrome air cleaner. The motor is combined with a Turbo
350 automatic transmission that shifts smoothly. The rear end is
out of a 1976 Monte Carlo and it has a 2:43 gear ratio. The front
end stub is out of a Camaro and features front disc brakes. The
power brakes were all rebuilt in 2020 when it also received a new
master cylinder. It also has a Saginaw 800 series power steering
system and rear air shocks making it a very comfortable driver.
The interior was fully redone throughout but has retained a mostly
stock appearance. Since being done it has been extremely well cared
for and maintained. It has nice Blue cloth upholstery with bench
seats in both front and rear with the front having 6 way power
controls. The door panels retain the stock style hardware but on
the drivers side a switch has been added for the front drivers side
power window. The dash was fully restored and is mostly stock but
has been customized with a newer stereo system and a Vintage Air AC
system that was installed in 2020. It also has a more modern
windshield wiper switch and that electric motor/system was redone
in 2020. The original style gauges all work properly and look
great. It also has a very cool original Buick steering wheel
sitting on top of the tilt column. The trunk has a ton of storage
space along with a shelf and houses a spare and jack.
This is a very cool car that comes with a lot of documentation and
receipts for every dollar that has been spent on it. It is a really
neat look into car restoration history as it features a lot of 80's
modifications that have since been refreshed in recent years.
