Vehicle Description
2004 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Coupe
Instead of mixing the thoroughbred Cobra V8 among lesser engines at
the Romeo, Michigan, manufacturing plant, Ford has chosen to
assemble the DOHC power plant off-line using a dozen two-member
teams. Each team will build one engine start to finish and sign off
their creation before sending it on its way. This personalized
touch also happens to be a longstanding tradition at Aston Martin,
the most exotic nameplate owned by the Ford Motor Company. Now,
with true craftsmanship and 390 horsepower snorting under the
muscle-Mustang's hood, America's original pony car enjoys
world-class bragging rights.
For consignment, a 2004 Mustang Cobra who's nickname amongst car
fanatics is known as "Terminator", with firepower coming from a
supercharged 4.6 liter, 32-valve DOHC V8 ot was to for Ford to kick
the Corvette's ass. While based on Ford's family of modular V8s,
the Cobra's engine is considerably more advanced. The engine
produces an underrated 390 horsepower and was designed to do one
thing and do it well...Go Fast!!! Wearing its original but weatherd
coating of Screaming Yellow, making this snake bitten pony 1 of 299
coupes built for the model year, and a comfy leather and suede
interior you have the mix of fine tuned euro sports car mixed with
good old American horsepower. Sporting a title verified 52,900
miles, this famous snake is ready to curl up and strike whatever
challengers come your way.
Exterior
Starting out life from the factory in Screaming Yellow and still
wearing that application today, the finish has succumbed to some
serious sun fade on the roof, hood and trunk lid. This fade is also
showing on the tops of the front and rear quarter panels and upon
closer investigation we can note some cracking in the clear and
base coats of the finish. The yellow is aplenty for this car and
save for the badging, there is not one lick of chrome anywhere. A
big front splitter goes mean and low to the ground and frames the
otherwise Mustang front grille with the long lived striking snake
in its center. Rocker flared fairings hover below the throwback
hockey stick cover above in the doors and rear quarter, and on back
a low profile spoiler keeps things grounded. Window trimmings are
all in black and the trio of tail lighting is still being used
harkening back to the days of yore in the mid 1960's. Just below is
now a nice aero designed body matching neoprene crash bumper with a
requisite COBRA embossment. Large polished stainless exhaust tips
peek out from either side under the bumper and polished 17-inch SVT
wheels are on all 4 corners wrapped in 275/40ZR17 rubber.
Interior
Sweet high back bucket seats in Graphite leather with plenty of
body hugging side panels keep you snugly in the seats when you are
doing doughnuts in the parking lot. Suede inserts with a stitched
snarling cobra present in more graphite with the driver's seat
showing a bit of leather wrinkling and age wear along with a few
mars and stains in the suede. The iconic Mustang twin eyebrow dash,
in black, shows a peppering of white-faced gauges inserted within
creates a stealthy look for the interior. There is a band of black
vinyl hugging the bottom of the dash, and the other side for the
glovebox is also black. A rear 2 plus 2 bench is in and can be
folded down for extra access to trunk storage. In the console we
see the factory leather wrapped knob shifter and as the center
console rises to the dash, we see the heater knobs and the factory
AM/FM/CD changer double-din stereo. Nicely preserved black carpet
floods the floors. All forms like the door panels and center
console all make heavy use of the french curve.
Drivetrain
A 4.6 Liter Supercharged DOHC 32 valve V8 which produces a whopping
390 horsepower is in and is fed by EFI. A Tremec T56 6-speed manual
transmission is on back, and Ford provides the 8.8-inch 3.55
limited slip rear axle. An open element air filter is the only
performance upgrade added to this potent handbuilt mill.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust is noted on the exhaust piping and driveshaft as
well as the flooring and unibody. Heavy surface rust, bordering on
invasive, is making an appearance at the tail end of the rear
unibody rails and crossmember. Keeping this venom filled horse
surefooted is an independent coil spring suspension for the front,
and a 4 link with coil spring independent rear suspension for the
back. Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners with Brembo front
rotors and PBR calipers all around. A stock dual exhaust system
with Flowmaster mufflers give this car its growl. We note the
addition of subframe connectors for extra chassis strength.
Drive-Ability
A quick startup, windows down and off to the test track I went like
a yellow streak. Here it handled very nicely, you can feel the 390
horses pushing you along, and braking brings all this fun to halt.
All functions were working just swimmingly.
For its day it was a definite powerhouse. Today it's a mere classic
with 390hp, 1 of 299 built in this color combination, a hand-built
drivetrain and that retina searing Screaming Yellow paint makes for
a great package. All you have to do now is "pony" up the dough!
