Vehicle Description
1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
Over the past 105 years, Chevrolet has built such a vast empire of
lovable offerings that some of them just seem to get overlooked.
Possibly the most substantial victim of that unfortunate phenomenon
is the storied Monte Carlo. Introduced in 1970, and proudly parked
in over half a million driveways during its first three years of
production, the brand's personal luxury coupe was decidedly cool.
And, not as ostentatious as a Corvette or as boorish as a Camaro,
the car spent most of its life as the poster child for evolving
automotive tastes.
For consignment, this second to last year Monte Carlo before the
front wheel drive 5th generation version came along in 1995. It is
a 1 owner, 60,641 mile solid cruiser that's benefitted from as
needed maintenance, always being garage kept, never driven in the
winter, and mainly used for around town and weekend shopping trips.
A new heater core, the AC has been converted to R134A, cooling
system overhaul, and a new cat back stainless exhaust system have
moved this once luxo-muscle cruiser from daily driver status to
show winner and crowd wower, you simply won't find more muscle and
luxury for the money!
Exterior
Paint code WA8535, Silver Metallic in layman's terms, adorns the
exterior of this car, and it has few faults to the finish, mainly
some light fading of the finish and some bubbling on the rocker
beneath the passenger's door. Then let's dress things up with some
black custom pinstriping and throw on some varying shades of gray
for the striping around the wheel wells and mid sections on either
side and on the bumper tops in front and rear. Add on an SS sticker
on the door panels, blacken the grille, add a window to the B
pillar, a spoiler to the trunk lid and two corner taillights on a
swooping down rear panel. Neoprene body matching colored bumpers
give the car an aero look. The racy look comes from the aluminum
wheels which play with satin and shiny silver paint to accentuate
their form. Outline white letter Goodyear tires in 215/65R15 format
are on all 4 corners.
Interior
Gray crushed velour with gray vinyl bolsters are seen on the rarely
ordered front split bench and rear bench seats. A center fold down
armrest is between the front split back bench. Factory air, along
with power windows, power steering and power locks, as well as a
toggle for the driver's mirror are the options that came with the
original car. A mix of gray crushed velour, dark gray carpeting and
molded gray plastic make up the door panels which are in very good
condition. Gray carpet floods the floors and appears in good
condition, but not without some lights soiling on the thresholds. A
clean and tight gray felted headliner hangs above, but does present
with a fewburns. I can also note a gauge package for this interior
and we cannot forget about the trunk with its black carpet, donut
spare and room for 3 of your buddies.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 305ci V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor on top and
attached to a 200R4 4-speed automatic transmission that throws
power to the rear wheels via a 10 bolt 3.73:1 limited slip
differential. This was standard setup for the 1987 Monte Carlo SS
and this powerplant generates a respectable for the era 180hp. All
this resides within a dusty and slightly patina riddled engine
bay.
Undercarriage
F41 sport suspension is mounted to a clean and invasive rust-free
frame and undercarriage, (floor pans, wheel wells, and rockers),
however we do note some surface rust on the flooring, frame, and
suspension components. Independent coil spring suspension is on
front along with power disc brakes and on back power drum brakes
work with a 4 link with coil spring suspension. Dual exhaust with a
new Pypes stainless steel cat-back that is nice and clean is
noted.
Drive-Ability
Always a pleasure to drive one of these, and this one is in
fabulous condition. It fired right up and on the test track cruised
and bruised when I put the accelerator to the floor. Solid panic
stopping which was boas free, and good handling. All functions were
functioning as they should but we did note a belt squeal from the
accessory drive when the AC was turned on.
The 87 Monte Carlo is easily the nicest A-Body car that General
Motors ever produced due to it not looking like anything else on
the road. This example, with its great stance, 1 owner, original
interior and powerful V8 engine and you could not ask for anything
else...well...you could, for it to be in your garage. An almost new
36-year-old car, now that's something to be said.
