Intro

This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 111/560 Cabriolet in Black with Cognac leather interior is a unicorn. It began life as a 280 SE 3.5 convertible. An elegant full-size convertible that today is sought after by discriminate collectors. What makes this 280 SE unique is that it underwent a robust restoration and transformation to a modern 560 SL/SEL/SEC drive train. It retains the build quality and classic beauty of the Mercedes-Benz 111 chassis and adds a fuel-injected overhead cam V8 power plant, independent suspension all around, power steering, power disc brakes, and many convenience features. The truly extraordinary qualities of this car lie in its attention to detail and unparalleled craftsmanship.

Exterior

The Mercedes Benz 280 SE 3.5 Convertible remains a sought-after and collectible car today. These cars were the last ones to be built largely by hand, and when new, they were astronomically expensive. Few were sold, and they have always been rare. Mercedes made passenger safety a priority with crumple zones, padded steering wheel and dashboard components, and three-point safety belts. This black 280 SE received a full-on restoration, with fresh paintwork, a brand-new top, and totally refinished brightwork. The car has an “as-new” presentation inside and out and appears entirely stock from the outside except for the “5.6” badge on the right side of the trunk lid.

Interior

As delivered new, this example was a U.S. specification car with desirable options and equipment including floor shift automatic transmission, Behr air conditioning, power windows, power brakes, and power steering. It has an all-new Cognac leather interior including the dash and console wood.

Mechanicals

This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE was converted from its original six-cylinder configuration to a 560 SL/SEL/SEC fuel-injected overhead cam V8 power plant and transmission that had covered just 60,000 miles. To ensure optimum performance the heads were rebuilt prior to installation. The Mercedes-Benz 560 transmission is mated to a 300 SEL 6.3 rear end for smoother high-speed performance on the freeway. Few miles have been logged since the meticulous conversion was completed.

Summary

One of the flagship models in its day, the 280 SE Convertible remains a sought-after and collectible car today. This example, with its modern 560 drive train will appeal to the performance minded classic Mercedes enthusiast who has always envisioned undertaking such a project, but never had the opportunity to do so. This is a rare classic with modern day engine and drivetrain that provides a one-of-a-kind, open air driving experience like no other.
