This 1956 Ford Thunderbird is an absolutely gorgeous convertible in
a fantastic 50s color combination and comes from esteemed prior
ownership. When the Ford Motor Company released the Thunderbird in
1955, it was intended to be Ford's flagship model and, to some
extent, Ford's answer to Chevrolet's Corvette. Considered more
comfortable than the Corvette, the early Thunderbird was a
cool-looking boulevard cruiser and the choice convertible of many
of the rich and famous in Hollywood and around the country. When
the 1956 Thunderbird was released, it was an even more refined
version of the first T-Bird with several key improvements. Perhaps
most notably, the removable hardtop in 1955 created troublesome
blindspots so to correct this issue, Ford installed portholes to
improved visibility. Similarly, owners of the 1955 Thunderbird
complained that the cabin was too windy with the top removed and
the windows down, so Ford added glass wing windows to each side to
deflect the wind. Lastly, one of the biggest complaints from the
first-year T-Birds was the lack of trunk space, impeded primarily
by a spare tire that took up a substantial portion of the trunk.
Accordingly, Ford added the rear mounted Continental Kit in 1956
which freed up much desired trunk space and added some 50s flair as
well. Although the Thunderbirds from 1955 and 1956 shared the same
body, the '56 T-Birds sported a few additional stylistic upgrade
including cowl vents on the fenders and new routing for the dual
exhaust out the rear of the car. 1956 also saw the introduction of
12 volt electrical systems across all of Ford's passenger car lines
which improved reliability of the electrical systems and starting
up across the board. This particular 1956 Thunderbird comes to us
from the collection of a prominent collector who owned the car for
the past 15 years and prior to that was under the stewardship of
Minter's Thunderbirds. Powering this 1957 Thunderbird is a 312
Cubic Inch V8 paired fed by a single 4 barrel carburetor that
together were said to have created 225 horsepower when new. Exhaust
exits the 312 V8 via dual exhaust setup that gives this classic
T-Bird a nice throaty sound out of the through-bumper tailpipes.
The 312 V8 is backed by an automatic transmission that ensures that
just about anybody can take this Baby Bird for a spin around the
block or to the local car show. With factory-style power brakes,
bringing this '57 Thunderbird to a complete stop is much easier
especially with all of that horsepower under the hood. Riding on a
set wide whitewall tires paired with wire basket wheelcovers, this
1956 Thunderbird has a truly classy look. The Colonial White
porthole hardtop and the black Haartz cloth soft top are both in
excellent condition and both are included in the sale of this
classic 1957 Thunderbird. The exterior of this Thunderbird has been
refinished in the rare Coral Mist paint scheme completing the
exterior look of this classic baby bird. The interior of this 1956
Thunderbird is absolutely gorgeous! The bench seat and door panels
have been correctly reupholstered in two-tone Black and White
vinyl, just how this convertible came out of the Dearborn
manufacturing plant back in 1956. The black vinyl upholstered dash,
black carpeting, and black painted steering wheel all appear to be
in in fantastic condition and all retain a nice stock appearance.
The dash is equipped with a 150 MPH speedometer, 5,000 RPM
tachometer, temperature gauge, fuel gauge, and clock, along with
indicator lights for oil pressure and the generator. A push-button
AM Town & Country Radio and heater controls are also incorporated
into the center of the dash, flanked by the instrument cluster to
one side and the glovebox on the other. Whether you're purchasing
your very first classic car or you're adding to an existing FoMoCo
classic car collection, this 1956 Ford Thunderbird would make an
excellent choice. Give us a call today at 763-428-7337!
