With the new interpretation of the legendary Sonderwunsch (special
request) program from the late 1970s, Porsche Classic and Porsche
Exclusive Manufaktur make it possible to design individualized,
one-off cars - co-created by the client and Porsche. This program
to individualize and restore unique sports cars is enhanced by a
combination of skilled craftsmanship and attention to detail.
This offering is divided into the areas of Factory Commissioning
for individual customer color and material requests directly in
production, as well as Factory Recommissioning and Factory One-Off
for already existing modern and classic cars. Whereas Factory
Recommissioning is all about the individualization of exterior
colors and interior trim materials, the Factory One-Off process is
based on systematic, new technical developments. Porsche experts
from a wide range of fields, depending on the project, handle the
client's request and have extensive expertise in current and
classic vehicles. Built as a Factory One-Off, the 911 Classic Club
Coupe marks the first one-off within the Sonderwunsch (special
request) program that is a classic vehicle.
During a meeting between Porsche Club of America (PCA), the largest
single marque car club in the world, and Porsche Classic, a
conversation arose around what a collaboration would have looked
like if Sonderwunsch and PCA had worked together in previous
decades. Thoughts quickly turned to the 2010 911 Sport Classic,
Porsche's first Exclusive Manufaktur series production model. With
inspiration now found, the ideas that would form the 911 Classic
Club Coupe began to take shape, and led to more questions,
specifically, what would a prequel to the 2010 911 Sport Classic
look like? To turn PCA's dreams into reality, Grant Larson -
designer of the Carrera GT Case Study, the 2012 911 Sport Classic,
and the 2023 911 Sport Classic and Director of Special Projects at
Style Porsche - involved himself from the very beginning. He was
inspired by PCA's goal, 'To create something unique that inspires
excitement' and to that end, Larson sketched out his vision of a
proto-Sport Classic from Style Porsche in Stuttgart. A stunning
combination of design elements from the first generation 911 GT3
and 911 Sport Classic, Larson's Classic Club Coupe design included
a 996.1 GT3 front bumper and rocker panels, a double-bubble roof,
ducktail, and forged wheels from Fuchs.
Concurrently, in Maryland, PCA Executive Director Vu Nguyen
searched for the perfect donor vehicle. Ultimately, a 1999 Porsche
911 Carrera Coupe was located in Virginia as the basis for this
Factory One-Off. It was fitting that Nguyen, a longtime 996 owner
himself, would locate and approve a 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera as the
starting point, with the 996-generation now officially recognized
as a member of the Porsche Classic family in its own right. Shortly
thereafter, the 911 Coupe was flown back to its birthplace of
Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen to begin the transformation from classic 911
to 911 Classic Club Coupe.
Upon arrival, the Carrera was completely stripped of its component
parts and treated to a chemical bath, removing all layers of paint.
The unibody, placed on a frame straightening bench, was precisely
measured and reshaped to return it to production specification
reaching the 'Body-In-White' phase once complete. Body panels were
refitted using the 'trial assembly' process with all gap dimensions
verified and optimized before being subjected to a cathodic dip
process to provide state-of-the-art rust protection. Deeply
invested in the build process, Porsche constructed a test mule to
evaluate and tweak the aerodynamics of Larson's design at the
Weissach development center wind tunnel. Finally, in an effort to
ensure a true 'one-of-one' build, this mule was dismantled once
testing was complete.
Armed with this knowledge, the production and assembly process by
Porsche Classic could begin in earnest with much of the bodyshell
reworked and reinforced to suit the new components - many of which
were sourced from GT3 models. In fact, the 911 Classic Club Coupe
employs the complete powertrain, brakes and suspension components
from the first GT3 model sold in the United States. Offering both
emissions compliance and lots of analog involvement and power, both
the M96.79 engine and G96.96 transmission were built from
completely new parts at Porsche. Additionally, Porsche produced a
bespoke, GT3-based suspension set-up for the 911 Classic Club Coupe
following testing at Nard and Idiada in Spain.
The completely refinished exterior artfully combines the newly
developed Sport Grey Metallic paint with dual stripes in Sport Grey
Light running across the hood, double bubble roof and ducktail
spoiler bordered by PCA Club Blau pinstripes, and side stripes with
the 911 Classic Club Coupe logo subtly incorporating the G-Model
911 Turbo shark fin gravel guard. Finally, both front fenders
received Porsche Classic Series badging reserved by Porsche for
only their most exclusive vehicles. The interior, completely new,
retains this pleasing blend of retro and modern with door panels
and sport seat centers in newly interpreted and unique Pepita
pattern, woven from Black and Slate Grey leather. Furthermore, the
interior features deviated stitch in Club Blau thread, a '911
Classic Club Coupe 001/001' limitation number badge on the
dashboard, 8000 rpm redline tachometer with stripes matching those
on the exterior with 911 Classic Club Coupe logo, and with
stainless-steel door sills also bearing the logo. Finally, the
interior features a custom Porsche Classic Communication Management
Plus (PCCM Plus) system with the start screen displaying its 911
Classic Club Coupe designation.
This 911 Classic Club Coupe is completed with unique accessory
items in terms of material selection and craftsmanship.
Underscoring the exceptional status of this Factory One-Off, these
accessories include a tailor-made car cover with bag, vehicle key
painted in Sport Grey Metallic with a leather pouch, and the tool
bag, first-aid kit bag, and touring bag made of matching interior
Pepita pattern braided leather. Revealed in 2022 at PCA's Werks
Reunion Amelia Island, this 911 Classic Club Coupe toured the
country that year, visiting PCA events such as the Porsche Parade
in the Poconos, Porsche Sports Car Together Fest at Indianapolis
Motor Speedway, Werks Reunion Monterey, and nStock showcasing not
only expert craftsmanship from Porsche Classic and Style Porsche,
but those dreams of the PCA and their members. In early 2023, the
911 Classic Club Coupe returned to Amelia, closing the circle of
its North American tour, featured prominently at Broad Arrow
Group's inaugural The Amelia Auction. Today, the Classic Club Coupe
features under 300 miles at cataloging and remains in 'as
delivered' condition a fitting tribute to the early ideas from
Porsche Classic and those who dared to dream big at Porsche Club of
America.
*Please note that the 911 Classic Club Coupe is only available for
purchase by PCA Members. Membership requires a straightforward
