Vehicle Description
The X-factor with this Camaro is its trim code (X55). MotoeXotica
Classic Cars presents this 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible.
Built during the second week of December 1968 in General Motors'
Norwood, Ohio assembly plant, this is one of 34,932 Camaro SS
models made in 1969.
The car is dressed in Rallye Green exterior (code 79) with white
stripes and a white, power-folding vinyl top with a matching boot.
The paint and trim and are in overall excellent condition. The
bodywork is straight. The engine bay is extremely tidy, the cargo
area is tidy and the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body.
This F-body rolls on Cooper Cobra Radial G/T tires, size 225/70R14
at all four corners. Each tire is mounted to a factory
turbine-style alloy wheel. The wheels and tires are all in very
good order.
Under the counterbalanced hood is a 350 CID Turbo-Fire V-8 engine
(code L48) with aluminum heads and Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap intake
manifold with a one-inch phenolic high-riser; a dual-feed 670 CFM
Holley Street Avenger four-barrel carburetor with an electric
choke. There is a high-energy ignition system, a chrome fuel pump
and a set of ceramic headers and a strong cam then the engine
breathes via Flowmaster dual exhausts. It's dressed up with a nice
set of polished finned valve covers and chrome pulleys, water pump,
bracket and air cleaner. Backing this motor is a Muncie M20
four-speed manual transmission with correct Hurst shifter and a
multi-leaf, 12-bolt rear end with 3.31:1 gearing. Driver
convenience features include a new, vintage air-conditioning system
(converted to R134a and recently recharged), power recirculating
ball steering and power disc/drum brakes. The X55 trim code is a
base car with SS350 rear fender louvers and black body sill.
Inside is a beautifully contrasting Ivory (code 727) vinyl
interior. The front, folding bucket seats are in great shape with
contrasting black carpeting. A deluxe three-spoke steering wheel
looks great, as do the white inner door panels and black dashboard.
There is a factory tachometer, a black center console with
woodgrain applique and four Autometer gauges look great and correct
Hurst shifter. An Autosound AM/FM stereo fills the gap in place of
the original AM radio.
The SS performance package consisted of a 350 CID or 396 CID V-8s
and chassis upgrades for better handling and to deal with the
additional power. The SS featured non-functional air inlets on the
hood, special striping and SS badging.
The 1969 Camaro carried over the previous year's drivetrain and
major mechanical components, but all-new sheet metal, except the
hood trunk lid and roof, gave the car a substantially sportier
look. The grille was redesigned with a heavy "V" slant and deeply
inset headlights. New door skins, rear quarter panels and rear
valance panel also gave the car a much lower, wider, more
aggressive look. This styling would serve for the 1969 model year
only.
Competition to this Camaro in 1969 included Ford's Mustang,
Mercury's Cougar, Plymouth's Barracuda and Pontiac's Firebird.
