Vehicle Description
1989 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z Convertible
The IROC race series invited champions from all walks of racing,
including NASCAR, CART, Le Mans, and even NHRA. No matter who won,
they were always driving an IROC Camaro and as they say in the biz,
win on Sunday, sell on Monday.
This version of the 1989 Camaro is in full IROC street garb.
Special painted badging, a low-slung windshield, some fairings,
canvas convertible version and a powerful secret lurking under the
hood were just a few of the features that were added to this
version of the Camaro. Built in sunny Van Nuys, CA and having spent
most of its life in dry Nevada, our consignor brought this car to
the East Coast and now with him in grad school, it's time to pass
this one on instead of letting it sit. Presently in the South
Mallway of our Hallowed Halls for your perusal, and having nearly
every mechanicalaspect gone over and replaced, along with an older
respray of the correct menacing black, this IROC Z is one for the
record books...I'll keep you in suspense with the hardcore details,
but I reckon this on would give a real IROC racer of the day a
serious run for the money.
Exterior
A respray of menacing black paint covers the straight steel body
panels, fairings, and front built in chin spoiler of the car and
shows with a few scuffs, spider cracks and imperfections. Just
above the rockers is blue striping the wraps entirely around the
car and black trimmings surround the glass and are also on the door
handles. IROC Z badging is also on the doors and creates a ribbed
fade from gray to white. Black canvas is the convertible top with a
clouded plastic rear window. On the back, a small spoiler trims off
the trunk lid, and on the back of the car are the iconic Camaro
shaped taillights that wrap around to the rear quarters. Matte
black 5 spoke 16-inch Camaro rims are attached to all 4 corners and
noted as "front" and "rear" wheels because of different offsets and
are wrapped in deeply treaded blackwall rubber. All is just fine
with this car's exterior condition.
Interior
A nearly new snazzy black leather bowls you over when you swing the
doors. A smooth leather armrest with a long pull arm within this
leather, as is a black plastic panel for the door actuator and
sport rear view mirrors power buttons. The seats, in bucket
configuration are donated from a 4th generation Trans Am with
adjustable air bladders for the front, also use the new black
leather with tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters. The rear 2
plus 2 bench also is in the same pattern. A black console and dash
house all the critical instrumentation, including the Dakota
Digital VHX gauges as well as climate controls, a Kenwood AM/FM/CD
stereo with a mix of Boston Acoustics speakers under the dash and
Pioneer speakers on the freshly recovered rear side panels, along
with a MGW shift lever within the console. Power windows are
installed here as well. Power locks, power steering, power brakes,
and a power driver's seat are working and are great conveniences
with this sports car. Clean fade free black carpeting floods the
floors and this is one tasteful comfortable interior.
Drivetrain
The beast lurks underneath the louvered hood...this beast specs out
as a 383ci stroker V8 with a .488 lift camshaft gives plenty of
smooth power. Holley Terminator EFI feeds the fuel though an
Edelbrock Torker II intake and on the back is a rebuilt by Tick
Performance Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission. All this
attached to a 10-bolt 3.73 posi rear axle that spins the rear tires
with ease.
Undercarriage
The floor pans are solid, as is the unibody construction and have
been strengthened thanks to welded in Alston inner subframe
connectors along with UMI outer connectors. Slight patina for the
suspension, which consists of independent coil springs for the
front, and a torque arm and coil springs for the back are seen. Our
consignor notes that all new Spohn steering components,
polyurethane bushings, Founders Performance adjustable struts, KYB
shocks, and Eibach lowering springs are up front. In the rear are
Founders Performance lower control arms with relocation brackets,
more Eibach springs, and an adjustablepanhard bar. Power disc
brakes are on all around for the whoah factor.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and smooth idle until the warmup was afforded to
me. I slipped into the leather interior and was grabbed by the
seats. A shift into 1st and I was off like a prom dress, with
blistering acceleration, smooth shifting, and good handling on the
test track things were just fine. She's able to cruise at highway
speeds easily, and I had the top down for my test, and it was a
pleasant experience with plenty of airflow from the outside and the
top manually operating smoothly. I did note the AC is not
connected, the wipers don't wipe, the heater blower wasn't blowing,
the passenger's power window wouldn't go up, the horn wouldn't
toot, and the power mirrors would work sporadically.
Except for the badging, this car is disguised as a mild mannered
everyday 1989 Chevrolet Camaro. A look under the hood, as well as
the IROC status option package L03, makes it anything but mild
mannered. All in very good condition, this car is a definite goer,
but can also be viewed at any car show you may want to drive it to.
Go ahead, get in and turn it over...well the engine, keep the
wheels down on the ground, although they have a tendency to spin
when you get goosey with your boot!
