1994 Jeep YJ Sahara
This low mileage (90,000) Jeep YJ Sahara is factory original metallic hunter green and has never been in an accident. It was first owned by a grandfather and then at 78,000 miles we bought it from his family after his passing. It was always garage stored by myself and the previous owner. The both of us are retired. As a retired automotive mechanic I went to work on it about 9,000 miles ago as a personal project for myself. It was not a primary vehicle so it has not been driven much.
Underneath was and has been kept clean. I do not go off road in it but it is handy around the ranch or to take a drive into town. On the other hand it can go elk or deer hunting tomorrow and handle the back country with ease and still bring you back home.
Some of the major improvements and changes I completed are listed below. My goal was to make it an E.M.P. proof vehicle which would be simple and stay running after such an incident. This also means no computer so it is now an easy old school carbureted, simple old school ignition, low pressure fuel delivery and now much more open and easy to work on. There are now no computer electronics to fail and be next to impossible to figure out.
I researched this work then removed the on board computer, EFI and all the emissions. Next I installed a new water heated aluminum intake manifold and dual dump headers then a 2.5-3.0 inch exhaust system with throaty tone. There is a manual choke easy to adjust dependable Webber two barrel carburetor. A washable air filter is on top. The in tank fuel pump was replaced with an easy to get at electric fuel pump along the frame with the fuel filter there. The excess not needed wiring was cut back or redirected to accept the non-computer operated vehicle conditions. A separate mechanical voltage regulator was added and a new speedometer in the dash as even those were computer controlled. The computer ignition system was simplified with a single wire HEI Distributor with adjustable vacuum and centrifugal advances. Now one can adjust the timing and curve. The cooling was much improved with a new four row aluminum radiator and new water pump.
The suspension got all new beefy 2” lift leaf springs and heavy duty shackles with nylon bushings. Rancho 500 shocks where added. New front brake calipers and pads were installed. New Jeep rims and top end Yokohama radial tires were also installed. Then aligned and it is now fun to drive.
Unfortunately the 4.0 motor developed an internal problem which is rare so I ordered a new re-manufactured 4.0 long block bored .30 over. It has a long and great extended transferable warranty to the next owner to. The fresh motor is in and running great as it is going through the 500 mile break in period right now.
The interior is near perfect and the seats are cloth with padded camo covers on them. A more recent AM/FM/CD player has been installed with new front lower speakers and overhead speakers. There is a remote attached with Velcro to the center console to run the system if desired. I installed a secured safe type lock box where the in dash glove box was located. It will easily store a large sidearm in there if desired. It has the original extra rear seat we have stored for 12 years and it is great shape. Added inside are water proof floor carpet mats and a rear mat.
We removed the hard top every year and installed the Bimini top. It takes about two easy hours to pull the two front doors, loosen and remove the hard top then install the Bimini sun shade top. It even has two lower hinge foot rests to set your onboard foot on while cruising. It is an absolute blast to drive.
The light duty front bumper was removed and a full boxed in heavy duty bumper was installed. It sports two clevis attachments, a square tube receiver and two large yellow HELLA lights. Then the light bar with an LED light system on when high beam is activated is a great dark to light add on. The headlights are Halogen H4 seal beams. This Jeep can light up the road after dark.
The useless back bumpers were removed and two separate bumpers were installed. One is a tube type bumper and the other is the towing bumper with a square tube receiver built in. Either front or rear bumpers can take a square tube hitch mounted winch to get you unstuck.
In the back are two LED back up flood lights (on in reverse) which will illuminate the ground back there like day time if backing up after dark. We had the hard top shell fully re-painted inside and out with a tan marine boat deck heavy duty tan speckled paint and it is nice.
This unique and easy to work on Jeep YJ has a 5 speed manual stick which my wife has never been able to work with. She just cannot do manual transmissions. The time has come now to sell this second vehicle and replace it with an automatic vehicle she can drive.
I doubt you will find a more perfect condition 1994 Jeep YJ out there as this one has not been beat up or off road abused.
