This 1956 Volkswagen Beetle Sunroof Coupe was kept tucked away in
the original owner's upstate New York barn for many years before it
was subjected to a complete nut-and-bolt restoration about 10 years
ago. The car received a recent oil change, valve adjustment and
tune-up. It was made in January 1956 in West Germany.
The car is presented in its original Strato Silver color. The paint
is in overall very good order but at close range there are some
blemishes. The car's trim pieces and hardware have been either
replaced or refurbished - bumpers, moldings, antenna, headlight
eyebrows and driver's side mirror.
This car rides on BFGoodrich 15-inch whitewall tires that are
mounted on steel wheels with early, military-style KDF Hubcaps. The
car has been lowered and fitted with a Lime Bugs front suspension
beam, adjustable Fox shock absorbers, Wilwood disc brakes, new tie
rods, kingpins and a new steering box.
The car's 1.2L air-cooled, four-cylinder motor was reportedly
rebuilt by a specialist in central Massachusetts and upgraded with
the following items - a mild camshaft, an Abarth 356-style exhaust
and an Okrasa kit featuring dual-port heads, dual German
carburetors, an external oil cooler and oil filter and features an
upgraded Freeway Flyer four-speed manual transmission.
Inside, the cabin has been completely reupholstered with new, gray,
white and blue material sourced from Germany. Accessories include a
folding canvas soft-top, a white, three-spoke steering wheel, a
pop-out windshield and a Okrasa shift knob.
For 1956, the Beetle received what would become one of its more
distinctive features, a set of twin chrome tailpipes. Models for
North America gained taller bumper guards and tubular overrider
bars.
Competition to this VW in 1956 included Nash's Metropolitan. If
