Vehicle Description
1920 White C Cab Truck
The White Motor Company was an American automobile, truck, bus and
agricultural tractor manufacturer from 1900 until 1980. The company
also produced bicycles, roller skates, automatic lathes, and sewing
machines. Before World War II, the company was based in Cleveland,
Ohio. White Diesel Engine Divisionin Springfield, Ohio,
manufactured diesel engine generators, which powered U.S. military
equipment and infrastructure, namely Army Nike and Air Force Bomarc
launch complexes, and other guided missile installations and
proving grounds, sections of SAGE and DEW Line stations, radars,
Combat Direction Centers and other ground facilities of the U.S.
aerospace defense ring, such as the Texas Towers. White Motor
Company ended car production after World War I to focus exclusively
on trucks. The company soon sold 10 percent of all trucks made in
the US. Although White produced all sizes of trucks from light
delivery to semi, the decision was made after WWII to produce only
large trucks. White acquired several truck manufacturing companies
during this time: Sterling, (in 1951), Autocar, (in 1953), REO, (in
1957), and Diamond T, (in 1958).
For consignment, a nicely restored 1920 White C Cab flat bed truck.
It has plenty of steel with wood accompanying construction, and is
nearly a showpiece. It presents in beautiful black and has solid
oak accenting and some red painted wheels for contrast. Coming to
our Hallowed Halls is an early piece of the American trucking
industry. The C cab is a very sought after collectible truck and
was the inspiration for the Hubley Toy company of Lancaster, PA to
make a replica which flew off the shelves.

Exterior
Among the first things one notices when looking at this truck is
the tall C shaped cabin sides. Hence its namesake C cab. This is
all wood on this truck and has been bathed in black paint with
white Dennis logoing. The steel in front and on the framing has all
been restored in the past and is now showing light aging, including
the brass radiator covering and honeycomb radiator. Just behind, a
black painted louvered and cowled hood protects the engine and in
back a steel reinforced wooden black painted firewall is seen. We
are sans headlights on this truck, which also has no doors, just
beautifully curved fenders in front that melt into the embossed
cleated running boards for easy cab access. A simple C-channel
frame runs the length of this truck and provides a structurally
sound black painted mounting surface for the engine, cab, and
flatbed structure. Speaking of which, the flatbed is made from
solid oak planks that have just the right amount of age wear and
patina. It's a very long bed and is held up by red painted steel
spoked wheels, 33-inch in the front and 36-inch in the rear which
have a band of solid rubber around them with dual tires on
back.
Interior
Under the C cab is the driver's compartment and it has a black
vinyl covered bench strategically placed under the roof for more
driver protection from the elements. Warm stained oak planks make
up the cab and roof structure with the perfect amount of varnish
accentuating the grain. A textured black steel floor houses the
gear shift lever, and handbrake. A long steering column rises for
the driver and has an oak rimmed steering wheel. The dash is all
steel and contains no gauges, just a fire extinguisher and a small
aluminum tank.
Drivetrain
Under the cowled hood is a restored rust and corrosion free
White-Otis L-head 4 cylinder of unknown displacement. It is powered
by gas and has a 1-barrel carburetor on top. A 3 speed manual
transmission is on back.
Undercarriage
Perfectly preserved and restored steel framing and leaf spring
suspension is seen. Oak boards are above the steel structure and
make up the bed. The wood underneath remains like new and we see
mechanical drum brakes are on the rear, which makes sense as that's
where the weight is carried.
Drive-Ability
While we weren't able to get this truck fired up, the engine does
turn by hand and makes good compression.
Just an older restoration yielding a fine example of one of the
most popular workhorse trucks produced. Capable of holding its own
in any show, and driving the truck to the show after some
tinkering. Now there is something to be said about that...
