Vehicle Description
1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7
It's restless, civilized, challenging, serene...it's a Cougar, and
it's like nobody else's car. Queue Farrah Fawcett to hug the cat on
the roof! "The Sign of the Cat" was the ad slogan that brought
Mercury back to life in the late 1960's
For consignment, fully restored, 1994 AACA National 1st and 2015
AACA Best In Show Original version of the Mercury Cougar XR-7 right
out of 1969. Sporting a near perfect paint job that is still
holding up better than most 4 year old "new" cars. A sexy vinyl
top, clean upholstery, the original window sticker, sales invoice,
a slew of brochures and other dealership paperwork and even the
original state inspection sticker on the windshield. If that isn't
enough to get your blood pumping, how about the 57,393 title
verified actual miles clocked on the odometer, this cat surely won't
last, so hurry up and grab it by the tail before someone else
does.
Exterior
The Cougar is quite different from the Mustang in the realm of
styling. Most noticeable was the front end "electric shaver" split
grille treatment with concealed headlights. At the rear, it came
with T-Bird sequential tail lights. Crisp clean white, which could
actually be the factory hue of Pastel Gray, covers the well gapped
panels and shows as nearly assembly line fresh. A black vinyl top
is looking nearly new and gives this kitty a perfect reverse tuxedo
vibe. Chrome bumpers and all trim retains its shine and shows very
little wear. Single exhaust with a turned down tip is tucked safely
away behind the rear valance at the bottom of the chassis. Mercury
14-inch steel wheels with red hubbed badge turbine style wheel
covers are wrapped in thin whitewall F70-14 rubber. Cue the cat
growling.
Interior
Swinging one of the two doors open we are met with 2 sporty black
vinyl covered wide tuck and roll buckets with comfort weave vinyl
inserts and accompanying headrests. In back is a matching bench
stretching across to vertical ribbed tuck and roll covered panels.
This pattern holds true for the doors as well which are in very
nice condition, bordering on showroom new. This car sports the XR-7
package, which was introduced in January of 1967. Much was made of
the Cougar's Euro theme and the XR-7 accentuated this. The dash was
covered with burled walnut applique. In front of the steering wheel
within full view of the pilot, a lineup of 4 round gauges 2 of
which are a speedometer and a tachometer and the others being
warning light clusters and fuel indicator. This applique panel is
within a stitched black leather dash top and front which is in very
good condition. Below is another beige horizontal panel that has a
few knobs and the ignition. In the center dash is a cascade of
black leather and more wood applique. Underneath the factory AM
radio on the XR-7 are the temp sliders just above the floor. Adding
to the European flair, was a row of Jaguar style toggle switches
above the center vents which controls various interior lights. In
front of the passenger is an oval panel wood applique dash front
which has an inset clock. Below is a black covered glovebox. The
headliner is black vinyl and tight, and the carpeting is a calmsea
of black and very original looking. I'm running my paws and nails
through this stuff.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a very clean engine bay and shows nicely. In its
center is the star in the form of a blue block and intake 351ci
Windsor V8 which is original to this car. It is topped with a
2-barrel carburetor, and a surrounding blue air cleaner covering.
The valve covers are also blue and nice and shiny. On the back is
the correct FMX 3-speed automatic transmission. Rounding things out
is a Ford 9-inch 3.00 Traclocrear axle. One wild cat and a beauty
to boot.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust is seen, but only on the exhaust and fuel tank.
As we move forward we are met with black undercoating/paint
covering the rock solid unibody, floors, torqueboxes, and inner
rockers. Single factory style exhaust is on and power disc brakes
for the front, and power drums for the rear. Keeping this cat glued
to the asphalt is an independent coil sprung front suspension that
works with a leaf spring arrangement in the rear. Like a cat on
carpet...
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and very smooth runner with acceleration aplenty
just push foot further to floor. Bias free braking, and good
handling make this a luxury muscle car much more upscale than the
Mustang, and with all functions operating as they should, things
just don't get much better than this.
A true show stopper, some AACA award wins, a complete restoration
which still is working wonderfully and looking great. Showing a
little age but in good overall condition. Also plenty of paperwork
for this cool cat to include the original window sticker, temporary
registration, dealership invoice and the original title. Our
consignor is even including all the original failed parts from the
car along with trophies from it's wins in 2015. I see the sign of
the cat in someone's future...
