Vehicle Description
1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible
The Cadillac Eldorado has always been a trend setter. The personal
luxury car market segment that Cadillac created with the Eldorado
was growing. The front-wheel drive version was going through its
very first redesign with the 1971-1972 models. It was a completely
new Fleetwood Eldorado not only in design but also in spirit. The
Fleetwood Eldorado was available as a coupe and a luxury
convertible replacing the DeVille convertible series. The "Standard
of the World" was still the luxury leader and the Fleetwood
Eldorado was still unmistakably Cadillac. The last Eldorado
convertible rolled off the line on April 22nd 1976, the end of the
drop top era for a few bleak years.
For consignment, a sizable, luxurious, convenience smattered, long
smooth cruiser piece of massive Detroit iron in this 1976 Eldorado
model. Front wheel drive, (look ma!!... no hump!), sharp angled
design, nice chrome trimmings, near perfect chrome bumpers, and a
leather interior all draped in an ivory/gold interior leather ready
for a night out on the town, or a cruise up to the clubhouse ready
to turn heads in classic style from 1976. A few faults are noted
and our consignor states that some recentbrake work was performed
and is now ready to part with this classic.

Exterior
Gas crisis? We don't need no stinking gas crisis, we will build it
even bigger, and allow it to drive on regular gas!!! And this
straight steel slabbed sided car which pays very close attention to
its gaps and pampers its chrome trimmings is definitely going to be
the belle of the ball. A V shaped massive grille with matching hood
atop, dual headlights on either side and cathedral turn signal and
cornering lights at the front and rear edges, you are driving
around in a 3 bedroom apartment on wheels. Trimming for the wheel
well surrounds, rockers, and a fine trim spear in mid-section with
exceedingly long rear quarter and deck. This car bleeds class. A
white canvas convertible top, with a rear glass window, allows for
your potential famous passengers to remain in total comfort while
they are whisked down the superhighways and byways of the country.
Phonecian Ivory, in goodcondition covers all these steel panels,
and it is very nicely applied but does present with some panel
mismatch, and even the prone to cracking filler panels are in great
shape. The badging all looks great, as does chrome which remains in
like new condition throughout, and standard issue Cadillac wheel
covers adron the steel wheels and are wrapped in medium whites on
all 4 corners.
Interior
A swing of the door and it's a lot like opening a well-balanced
safe door! Heavy, but easy to do. On the doors are power controls,
chromed panels, ivory gold stitched leather and vinyl, and gold
carpeted lowers for the doors. A peppering of wood applique is also
seen on these door panels. Inside an ultra-wide ivory gold leather
split bench with a fold down armrest is showing some creases,
slight soiling, sports plenty of power adjustments, and is large
enough to accommodate a 3rd front row passenger. In the back, a
wide bench matching the front in design setup stretches from side
to side. The standard square and rectangle dash courtesy GM is in
front and has the trappings of a high optioned car in the form of
auto dimming headlights, cruise control, climate control, a modern
AM/FM digital stereo, A/C, power steering, power brakes, and all
very clean. The original 3 spoke steering wheel with wood applique
inserted into the rim wrap fronts this original looking dash.
Goldcarpet floods the floors and shows some light fading and
staining, especially at the entry points.
Drivetrain
A 500ci V8 engine fits nicely into the large engine bay with a
little patina present. A 4-barrel carburetor feeds the massive
engine its mixture of fossils and air and a TH425 automatic
transmission is on back. 2.73 are the gears for the final drive
ratio. Our consignor notes that a new starter was recently
installed.
Undercarriage
Unrestored but solid is the presentation for the undercarriage. The
frame is sound and sturdy as are the floor pans which are showing
some minor surface rust in a few places but nothing remarkable.
Independent torsion bars for the front suspension, and a 4 link
with coil springs are on back. Rebuilt power disc brakes with a new
master cylinder are on all 4 corners to bring this car to a halt
with ease. Single exhaust sends spent gasses out the back of the
car and we note that the catalytic has been removed.
Drive-Ability
She started with a turn of the key and ran beautifully. A
smooooooth cruise, good tight steering and straight braking. With
the 500 cubes it did not take too much time to get to cruising
speed, and the transmission shifted smoothly on the way there. All
functions were working beautifully save for the power antenna not
moving and the A/C which did not blow cold, otherwise all was
good.
A large and in charge example of the mid 1970's idea of luxury.
Damn the torpedoes when it comes to any gas crisis, because we will
take a 500ci engine, and bolt massive steel panels around it, and
pepper it with luxury and conveniences, and you can be on your
way...to the top... only in Cadillac style.
