Vehicle Description
This 1956 Oldsmobile 98 Starfire Convertible is a beautifully
restored, top-of-the-line cruiser that anybody will enjoy on a nice
summer day! When Oldsmobile's 1955 sales year finished, it broke
internal records for sales beating all sales totals from any
previous year. So when Olds dealers saw the new 1956 models, they
were both excited and motivated. The 1956 Oldsmobiles had an
updated look both inside and out. Perhaps the most noticeable
revision inside was the change made to the dashboards and
instrument clusters that retained the classy space-age look, but
were modernized to a degree. On the exterior, the 1956 Oldsmobiles
saw a major redesign to their chrome grilles; the horizonal divider
was replaced by a jet-inspired vertical chrome divider bar that
created two deeply concave pods. Down the sides, the rear quarter
panels were also refined to give the cars a "swept flank" look
similar to many other cars of the era. In 1956, Oldsmobile offered
two models as convertibles-the short wheelbase sporty Super 88 and
the more luxurious 98 that was the top-of-the-line boulevard
cruiser. To denote the high-end positioning of the 98 convertibles,
Oldsmobile called the Ninety-Eight convertible a "Starfire" further
differentiating it from the base Super 88 convertible. Not only did
the Ninety-Eight have a special name and sit on its own 126 inch
chassis, 4 inches longer than the 88 and Super 88, they also came
with top of the line trim including special backup light trim, a
padded dash, a deluxe steering wheel, and power steering all as
standard equipment, along with a number of other options. In total,
only 8,581 98 Starfire Convertibles were produced in 1956, which
makes this 50s cruiser quite the rare automobile. This particular
1956 Olds 98 Starfire comes to us from a well-established
southern-based collection where it was cared for by true
enthusiasts. The 324 Cubic Inch "Rocket" V8 is fed by a single 4
barrel carburetor that together were said to have created a
whopping 240 horsepower when new. The 324 Rocket V8 is backed by a
"Jetaway" Hydra-Matic Automatic Transmission that ensures that just
about anybody can take this '56 Olds Ninety-Eight for a spin around
the block. Exhaust exits the Olds Rocket powerplant via a dual
setup that gives this Oldsmobile a nice throaty sound out the back.
The 98 Convertible is riding on a set of wide whitewall bias-ply
tires, each paired with Deluxe Spinner-Style wheelcovers, that give
the car a fantastic look going down the road. Of course, being that
the Ninety-Eight was the premium model for Oldsmobile back in 1956,
they came absolutely loaded with options! With power steering, this
4,000+ pound automobile glides effortlessly in and out of tight
spaces, whether at the local car show or at the neighborhood ice
cream parlor. Power brakes are also a wonderful addition on this
classic Oldsmobile since it makes bringing it to a complete stop
much easier. The white vinyl power convertible top is in fantastic
condition and goes up and down with the simple flick of a switch.
The exterior of this Oldsmobile 98 Convertible has been beautifully
refinished in in a two-tone paint scheme consisting of Festival Red
and Alcan White. Gorgeous space-inspired chrome and brightwork
complete the exterior look of this 1956 Oldsmobile. The interior on
this 98 Starfire is absolutely stunning! The front and rear bench
seats have been reupholstered in beautiful Red Leather and the
front seat glides forward and backwards with the flick of a switch.
This Olds Starfire is also equipped with power windows and an
Autronic Eye which were quite the novelty back in 1956. The padded
dash, door panels, red carpeting, and steering wheel all are in
wonderful condition and present in their stock configuration. The
dash is equipped with a 120 MPH speedometer, fuel gauge, Super De
Luxe AM Radio and clock, along with indicator lights for the turn
signals, engine temperature, generator, and oil pressure. A pair of
Stewart Warner auxiliary gauges consisting of an oil pressure gauge
and amp gauge provide a bit more insight into the engine's
performance and are tucked neatly under the dash. Whether you're
adding to your existing GM collection or you're buying your very
first classic or collectible car, this 1956 Oldsmobile 98 Starfire
Convertible would make an excellent choice. Give us a call today at
