Vehicle Description
1971 BMW 2800CS -Coupe - 5 speed -Outstanding
This is very original documented two owner 1971 BMW 2800CS
(Chassis: 2280295). It has some service records, even going back to
the 1970's, and remained with its original owner until the seller's
acquisition in 2017. Between 2013 and 2018 the car was mechanically
refreshed, which included a new OEM style springs and Bilsteins,
new OEM control arms, and conversion from an automatic to a BMW
Getrag five-speed manual transmission. The car is finished in
metallic gray over the optional factory tan pigskin leather
upholstery and powered by the original 2.8-liter inline-six. It is
now equipped with twin Weber DGAV carburetors, a PerTronix ignition
system, original 14" alloy wheels, a left-side mirror, air
conditioning, power windows, and an AM/FM cassette stereo. This E9
coupe is offered with a clean Tennessee title in the seller's
name.
The car left the factory finished in Polaris Metallic (060) and was
reportedly repainted by BMW in Anthracite Metallic in 1974 due to a
factory paint finish issue. Exterior features include chrome
bumpers, bright metal trim, and quad headlights with yellow inner
lenses. The car was Ziebarted for rust protection when new, and the
front and rear valances were refinished, the rocker panels were
resealed, and undercoating was applied to the wheel wells and floor
in the mid-2010's. The factory "automatic" badge was also removed
and the badge holes were plugged, and paintless dent removal and
paint touch-ups were performed in 2018. To correct some clearcoat
crazing and some minor bubbling, the trunk lid was resprayed in
2023 with new OEM badging applied.
Alloy 14" wheels wear polished hubcaps and are mounted with 195/70
Goodyear Integrity tires. Stopping power is provided by disc brakes
up front and drums out back. With the refurbished suspension and
the new Weber's and ignition system, this 2800CS runs and drives
exceptionally well.
The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench (dual
seating areas) trimmed in original OEM upgraded pigskin tan leather
along with color-coordinated door panels and brown carpets. Some
front seating surfaces were repaired in 2018 using pigskin leather
removed from the backs (behind) the seats and subsequently
replaced. The car is equipped with coco floor mats, and original
wood accents on the dashboard and side panels. The three point
seatbelt retractors are working but a bit sticky.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a 150-mph speedometer, a
tachometer with a 6,200-rpm redline, a combination gauge, and a
clock. The five-digit odometer is inoperative and shows 68k miles.
True mileage is unknown.
Recent service in November 2022 included recharging the air
conditioning system and replacing the spark plugs and speedometer
cable seal. The correspondence from BMW Group Classic indicates the
original color and delivery to Hoffman Motors in New York, New
York. Manufacturer's literature, replacement taillight lenses, and
recent service records and some records dating to the 1970's are
included in the sale.
