Vehicle Description
1968 Dodge Dart GTS Hardtop
Yearning for a member of the Scat Pack? Do the current market
values of a Charger R/T and Coronet R/T have your wallet screaming
with agony? Don't worry-you can leave that 401K untouched, since
the fine folks at Dodge offered a third, and often forgotten,
member of the Scat family: the Dart GT Sport, also referred to as
the Dart GTS. Thx to Hemmings for help on this intro!
For consignment, a fully known history 1968 Dodge Dart GTS that has
undergone a complete restoration making it better than it was when
it left the Hamtramck facility on August 31st 1967. From the
rebuilt engine with it's mild performance cam, to the clean body,
to theassembly line fresh suspension,no stone was left unturned
during the redux. A Mopar Muscle feature car that could also double
as an ad for the car way back in 1968, yes it's that nice! The
Mopar bug bit early on with our consignor who through the years had
a 383 powered Super Bee and an AAR 'Cuda before taking a break from
cars to focus on family. As our consignorreminisces back to 1968,
when a friend of his had the same year Dart GTS with an automatic
transmission that ran 14.50's in the 1/4 miles, he was impressed
and fast forward to 2009, the sight of that GTS never went away.
Having enjoyed this stunning consignment for the past 14 years,
it's time to move on to retirement for our consignorand his wife,
and that makes it your opportunity to snatch up this example of
A-body muscle from the pentastar camp. I'd say the whole white hat
boys' package is all here in the North Hallway, (for now).
Exterior
In 1968 the front of the car had a single headlight on either side
with a slightly smaller signal light nearby. The Mopar grille with
its 4 central open sections and a center horizontal bar gives it
the Dodge look in front. A dual side vented hood, nice front and
rear quarters, which are adorned with pencil thin wheel well
trimmings, but the star of the show is the black sport stripe
running just below the beltline from stem to stern. Keeping things
fender tag correct the car is bathed in a near perfect coating of
white and gazing at this paint is almost hypnotic as you will
become mesmerized as to its depth. The white vinyl top covers the
expansive roof as well as the sloping rear pillars and convex glass
to give this car a late 1960's cool feel. A wide stainless trim
surrounds the windshield and surrounds the remainder of the glass.
A side view of this car looks like they just drew a straight flat
line from the hood to the trunk deck and save for the windshield is
flat as a board. On the back, angled tail lights are on each corner
and a large ribbed aluminum panel with a D O D G E badge in the
center grounds the lights in the corners. A shiny bumper is below,
and this car just glistens in any light. 14-inch white painted
wheels with fratzog emblazoned dog dish caps are on all 4 corners,
and all are wrapped in like new 205/70R14 red stripe rubber, just
the way it was born.
Interior
With a swing of either door allows us to see miles of white vinyl
covering nearly all surfaces. White vinyldoor panels with their GTS
badges and shiny handles are framed above and below by ember gold
steel, and low back buckets in front which are just pristine and
white. A rear bench is in, and this looks very good as well just
like the buckets. Black seat belts add some contrast to the white,
and this can also be said for the dash which has a padded ember
gold dash top and black and chrome trimmed horizontal band for the
dash front all surrounded by gold steel. A very clean 60's design
not unlike the ties of the era, sleek and thin. In the center of
the buckets is the quintessential A-body shifter growing from the
gold carpeted hump, just the way it should be. This gold carpeting
continues to flood all the flooring and this dash and seating could
not get any better! Hanging proudly above is a tight, white and
clean perforated vinyl headliner with a working dome light. Not to
be forgotten is the well restored trunk with is white painted
sides, plaid vinyl mat and correct factory jack.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is the correct and original 340ci V8 bathed in
correct red paint. This mill has been rebuilt and was treated to a
.030 overbore as well as having a milder performance camshaft
installed, (.500 lift). It has a single 4-barrel carburetor feeding
it from under the chrome 340 4-barrel dressed air cleaner assembly.
On back is the correct A833 4-speed manual transmission, which
pushes power rearward to an 8-3/4 inch 3.23 Sure Grip rear
axle.
Undercarriage
Underneath some patina mixed in with the black unibody, flooring,
rockers and trunk, but all unremarkable. Drum brakes are on the4's
to bring this beauty to a stop. Independent torsion bars are
upfront and leaf springs in back. Dual exhaust with headers makes
its way through like new Dynomax mufflers.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and smooooooth runner with great acceleration,
fine handling and bias free panic stopping. All was well with the
transmission and other functions of this car. A veritable trip back
in time back to a Dodge dealership in 1968.
A near flawlessly executed restoration, now a turnkey car with a
340ci V8, 4-barrel carb, A833 tranny and a full history through the
years. A like new interior, excellent paint, just put the key in
the ignition and drive to a show, win an award and then go home. Or
take a retro road trip and turn heads for miles and miles.
