Vehicle Description
1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Fastback
Muscle car is an American term for high-performance cars, usually
but not limited to rear-wheel drive and fitted with a large and
powerful V8 engine. The term originated for 1960's and early 1970's
special editions of mass-production cars which were designed for
drag racing.
For consignment, a once mild mannered, (as if a 390ci V8 4-speed
manual Galaxie could be called mild mannered), 1963 Galaxie 500
Fastback now sporting a freshly rebuilt 427ci V8, dual 4-barrel
carburetors and a whole lot of Space Race good looks. This was
known in the day as a total performance vehicle, is nicely
presented with great paint, optional fender skirts included, and a
like new red interior, a highway cruiser or street bruiser. It will
have you envisioning yourself running down the back roads of
Georgia with a trunk full of shine and the lawman on your tail.
Exterior
With mirror-like chromed front and rear bumpers, both with small
black rubber tipped dagmars, dual headlights and an undulating
stainless eggcrate grille as well as turbine style round tail
lights, this is truly a jet age car. Straight steel panels are
bathed in Corinthian White and show only a few minor imperfections.
Meanwhile, the slab steel sides are highlighted by an upper trim
spear that works its way to the rear, heads briefly downward, then
returns to just in front of the front quarter. In front of the
downward turn on the rear quarter, is a series of vertical
rectangles which add to the jet age mystique. Chrome and gold
crossed flags and eagle 427ci call outs are seen at the front of
each front fender along with Galaxie 500 in grandmother's script
and a gold crown grace the lower front fenders. Black 14-inch steel
wheels with faux knock-off wire wheel covers are wrapped in thin
white wall radialsgiving this car a somewhat unassuming look...but
beware! The huge Corinthian White steel roof gracefully swoops down
to meet the 3 bedroom NYC apartment sized trunk and with its
pseudo-fastback styling, gives the aura of motion even when
standing still.
Interior
With a swing of the doors we greet several red vinyl covered
surfaces, all appearing new and all in good condition. The front
split bench is red tuck and roll inserts and smooth red bolsters
and some white piping racing around the border of the two. The rear
bench copies this style. A very clean and shiny original dash and
steering wheel are noted as well as an aftermarket tachometer with
built in shift light strapped to the column. The instrument cluster
has a spaceship styling to it, and we see an Alpine AM/FM/Cassette
radio in the center sandwiched between the heater slides and
factory clock. Red carpet floods the floors and sitting proudly on
the hump within reach of the driver is a floor shifter which was
totally unexpected. A nice tight headliner, in contrasting white,
is above all the passenger compartment. Bringing out attention
briefly to the trunk it has its original vinyl liner and a spare
and jack neatly tucked away in the front.
Drivetrain
This "top loader" 4-speed manual equipped car comes with a big
block FE 427ci V8 cross bolted main mill. This monster V8 is fed by
a duo of Holley 4-barrel carbs lurking under a black crinkle finish
air cleaner assembly. An aluminum intake is on to deliver the
fossils and air to the mighty mill and chrome valve covers addjust
the right retro feel. A 4-speed manual top loader transmission is
attached to the back of the mill. Power to the rear wheels goes
through a Ford 9-inch 3.50 rear with a consignor added TracLoc
unit. A thoroughly restored engine bay with miles deep black paint
along with some chrome dress up the filler caps and factory cast
iron headers will make you look twice.
Undercarriage
Miles of black steel make up this expansive undercarriage, all with
little to no signs of rust, and that includes the surface variety.
Independent coil springs upfront, and leaf springs on the rear
provide the suspension. Power drum brakes are on both the front and
on the rear. Meanwhile, a good-looking dual exhaust makes its way
from the cast iron headers at the engine to turn-down style
tailpipes under the rear bumper. Everything is looking tip top to
help keep you out in front of the backwoods smokey.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and smooth idler, this car left us with no
disappointment. It can cruise, and it can accelerate on demand.
Everything was functioning on our drive, however we weren't able to
rouse the Morgantown PD into a back roads chase.
A nicely done car, nearly perfect and much nicer than a driver, but
definitely not a garage queen, this full sized muscle was meant to
be driven. Crisp clean Corinthian White exterior paint, and a red
vinyl interior, with a powerful mill and top loader transmission,
we are ready to go to hyperdrive. Keep your eyes on the
rearview...the lawman caught word of our cargo in the trunk.
